Looking for pattern

While looking through the books at joann's the other day I saw a quilt pattern that I really liked and of course I didn't get the book. Now I have an order that I could use the pattern for and can 't find the book again. It looked like it was rectangle pieces - one was horizontal and two were layed vertical to make the block. When I tried to cut the pieces all the same size (4 x 8) of course they didn't make even blocks. A fairly easy pattern but I can't figure what size to cut the pieces. hope my description is clear. Has anyone seen this pattern?

If I'm visualizing correctly, you want a finished block that's 8 wide and 12 tall, with 3 fabrics in each, and each fabric patch the same size, with one rectangle horizontal on top and two vertical underneath? You would cut 3 patches 4 1/2 x 8 1/2, so that when sewn together, you have a 8 1/2 x 12 1/2 block before joining with others. I think there'd be several ways to make interesting visual patterns from lots of these blocks, identical in structure but with different (planned or scrappy) fabrics, especially if you staggered them. Well, you'd HAVE to stagger them, because they are rectangles, not squares. -- However, I may have your initial idea all wrong...

That's exactly the way I did it using those same measurements but I think the blocks were square when the 3 rectangles were sewn together which is impossible which is why I'm trying to find the pattern book again or at least a picture of it. Guess that will teach me that if I like a pattern, buy it even if I don't have plans for it. The only way I can get the block to come out even is to cut one length 9 inches and use 3 below the horizontal 6 inches and all four are cut 3 ". i'm going to try another joann s tomorrow. Thanks for your help.

Are you looking at the Split Rail Fence?

Something like this? Do you remember anything about the book - who wrote it, what color it was, etc.?

I think this might be it. Thanks everyone for your help.

Holice shared one awhile back that is very effective as well. http://www.quiltingboard.com/main-f1...n-t105532.html

That is one great quilt pattern, too! Simple AND beautiful!

It's funny how we interpret things differently - after reading Cagey's description, I was positive this was the pattern she was looking for! :D

It's kind of like that story about blind people describing an elephant, isn't it?

And BTW... I love the quilt on the link you provided! Thanks for the heads up!

Peckish 08-02-2012 09:02 AM

I'm surprised you were able to pin that quilt at all, Rita (owner of Red Pepper Quilts) does NOT allow pinning from her site, and it states very clearly on her blog that she requires you get permission from her before posting any of her content (including images). Providing a link to her website would be preferable. :)

JEM2012 08-02-2012 09:04 AM

Really? I didn't know that! She says "please feel free to link to my site," and I guess I view pinning as more of a link than a use of copyrighted photos without attribution to the original owner. The link is inherent in the pin - you can't pin something without it being a link back to the original. That's just how it works. The pin IS a link, it's just a link that uses a picture instead of http:// text. To me, it's not the same thing as posting a picture of something she did on her blog on your own blog without giving any credit. I also always include her name in the pin text so she gets credit. There is certainly nothing technical that prevents pinning from her site (as there is on some flickr pages, for example).

Peckish 08-02-2012 09:30 AM

Well, you can debate the finer points of pinning and linking with her, since she's the one setting up the rules for her site. She has advertisers on her site, and she doesn't make money if her images are seen on Pinterest instead of her blog. So she prefers that you simply give a URL link for people to see her quilts, instead of a picture of the quilt itself. I certainly don't begrudge her for trying to make money any way she can from her talent.
She DOES have pinning disabled on her site for all her copyrighted images, so when someone tries to pin, the picture is grayed out and a message is displayed that says that image cannot be pinned.

JEM2012 08-02-2012 09:41 AM

I certainly don't begrudge her trying to make money either, I just had never considered that someone might view pinning as different than a link, because I've always thought of it as a different and better type of link. If it were my site, I would prefer a pin because someone is more likely to look back to the original based on a gorgeous photo than a text link. For example, I wouldn't know she existed if I hadn't seen her quilts on Pinterest. But if that's her preference I certainly won't do it! I was just explaining why I hadn't thought it was an issue. I deleted the pin from my pinterest account, and I would take down the photo here but it won't let me edit or delete the old post, unfortunately.

There is definitely nothing preventing pinning on her site though. I've pinned directly from it from my home computer, and just tried it on my work computer and it worked, and I've seen her pins on pinterest several times. It is technically possible to pin from her Etsy site as well. If you search "red pepper quilts" on pinterst, hundreds of pictures from her site come up, and that doesn't account for the hundreds of repins from those pins. So if she thinks she is blocking pinning, something is not set up correctly. She does block pinning from her flickr page (I just tried it), but that doesn't block pinning of posts on her own blog or on her Etsy store that use pictures from the flickr.

Peggi, this is also the pattern I thought she was describing.

Interesting. It's set up correctly for me - you must be running a completely different system. Here is what I get. It's pretty faint here, but the pictures of her quilts are grayed out and the type says "sorry, cannot pin this image".

No worries about the images, I'm sure a mod will remove them for you. But I have to agree about Rita's quilts - they're beautiful, aren't they? :)

JEM2012 08-02-2012 10:15 AM

So strange, Peggi. I use Chrome, so maybe it's just not set up effectively for that browser?? I did send a message to the mods asking them to delete, so hopefully they will do that soon.

Her quilts are stunning though! She has one of the sites that got me really excited about getting into this - I basically want to make every one of her patterns.

Peckish 08-02-2012 10:48 AM

You know what, Jem? I was thinking about this while doing chores, and I got curious and checked, and Rita has a Pinterest board with several of her quilts! So now I'm confused, because obviously you can re-pin from her boards. I didn't see that specific quilt that you posted, but I'm going to email her and ask if she's had a change of heart about pinning from her site. And if she has, I will be back with a sincere and heartfelt apology to you.

JEM2012 08-03-2012 08:00 AM

No need to apologize either way - you were standing up for someone's property rights, nothing at all to be sorry about!! I felt horrible because it hadn't occurred to me that someone might view pinning as a use of copyrighted material. I'm a lawyer, so usually I try to hold of up the law :)

Peckish 08-03-2012 08:20 AM

Okay, here is Rita's reply to my query:

"Hi Peggi

Thank you so much for emailing me about this. I have such a love/dislike relationship with Pinterest. I think Pinterest is a great way to collect images and links all in one place for future reference, etc, but my biggest concern is that Pinners weren't paying particular attention to ensuring that the link/source of the image was correct.

For example, this is my image: http://pinterest.com/pin/24980972903036910/

This pin was repinned to 1380 different boards, and who knows how many times it was repinned from there.

Unfortunately, this image was linked to another person's blog - when it was pinned - as this blogger used my image without my knowledge or permission. When I asked them to delete the image from their blog, or at least acknowledge and link the image to my blog, they did delete it but also thought I was being unfair. It seems there is a general misconception that if you put an image "out there" on the internet, it is a "free for all". This obviously is not the case. Deleting the image from their blog also had no impact on the image pinned to Pinterest.

Anyway, at that point I decided it was best to join Pinterest myself. I pin my own pins to my board to ensure that the correct link/source is included. I really enjoy Pinterest and seeing what others are making etc, and I think that Pinners have come a long way in pinning images correctly and with the right link. Just because an image has been pinned to Pinterest doesn't mean that someone can use that image on their blog/website.

I don't mind my images being pinned to Pinterest directly from my blog. I do have a Flickr photostream, the images there can now no longer be pinned. Flickr is another tricky situation as I cannot link from my Flickr photos to my blog. Flickr cannot be used for commercial purposes and therefore I cannot link from Flickr to my blog as I am "running a business" from my blog. Flickr accounts linking to a business can have their images deleted.

I do mind when my images are used by other bloggers on their blog/website
- and this is solely because of Pinterest and what happened with the image linked to above.

I hope that makes sense? It's a tricky situation.

Regards,
Rita"

Peckish 08-03-2012 08:25 AM

So, Jem, I sincerely apologize to you, I was wrong. You CAN pin her quilts. Guess where I'm going now? :)
