looking for a pattern
I have seen a quilt that I want to make but not coming up with a pattern. The woman who has the quilt thinks it was in a magazine. It could be a pinwheel or windmills--no luck with those words. It has 6 blades but the next blade nests right next to the blade of the previous "wheel". They are not individual blocks and I think that's where I'd run into trouble trying to recreate a pattern. Anyone have a suggestion as to either a name to search or the actual pattern for this?
|
Can you post a photo of the quilt, it would help a lot.
|
Is it anything like this one? It only uses HSTs, but there is a link to the free pattern.
I can't imagine your quilt only having 6 blades. Windmill cushion |
Try Googling Tesselating quilt patterns to see if you spot it.
|
Maybe look for 6 pointed star quilts? There are lots on Pinterest.
|
Without a picture it will be hard to find the pattern.

I have a picture but not finding how to post it

Don't forget to scroll over to the far right to find and click on the "Upload" button. I have found that only the big red "Reply" button or "Quote" work to give me the paper clip icon to work for adding pictures. https://www.quiltingboard.com/attach...p-location.jpg Some additional info regarding reducing images at post #4 and images for the scroll and upload button can be found at #5 of https://www.quiltingboard.com/main-f...d-t312607.html Janey - Neat people never make the exciting discoveries I do. |
Don't forget to enlarge the pop up screen to find the upload tab which is on the far right of the window. This is what confuses a lot of posters.
And I have to select GO ADVANCED reply to find the paperclip icon to click. It is the most complicated to post pictures here then other forums. |
Could it be a One Block Wonder quilt? Those and the kaleidoscope stack and whack quilts are the main ones I think of with 6 blades in the blocks.
https://th.bing.com/th/id/R4a28afd3c...sl=&pid=ImgRaw And no, I didn't make this one, just a pretty one I found on the Internet and am going to use for my inspiration. |
|
Both of those are beautiful but not what I'm looking for. I suppose the best I can describe the way the blocks are is somewhat like the jigsaw pattern that the shapes intertwine. The tessalating patterns seem to be the closest.
I'd love to post a picture but the description of how to do that is beyond my comprehension. Why can't we simply copy/paste? As to the thing of it being 6 blades--each FINISHES at 2 1/2" so would be cut at 3" and there is a triangle shape background. If that helps anyone. I'll continue to look with the tessalating suggestions. Seeing some really pretty quilts doing this! |
We used to be able to copy and paste, but for some reason that option went away with the last forum upgrade.
You *can*, however, copy and paste a link. Is there a place on the web where you've found a picture of this quilt? Or maybe it's in your Flickr account? You can paste a link to the picture here very easily. ;) |
Hmmmm I think I might have an idea of what quilt you're talking about, my friend Cindi made one that sounds like what you're describing. Let me contact her or see if I can find it. I seem to remember it was on Simply Quilts, or The Quilt Show....

This one seems to fit the bill, and it is only one block, but color sorting would be confusing.

Could it be this one? Scroll down to see the block.
I've seen it back recently but can't remember where. http://www.jaybirdquilts.com/2010/05...g-block-5.html |
ok. Here's how the finished quilt looks. I guess she has a
pattern called Tiny Dancer with this block. Edit: I noticed that Tiny Dancer use a different method. But you can achieve the same by using jelly rolls or 2.5" strips and use her tutorial for hexagon quilt along. http://www.jaybirdquilts.com/2013/05/tiny-dancer.html |

There it is!!! It's the one from aquiltinglife. But now how to get the pattern? The link takes me to the final construction and, when I clicked on "download the pattern", nothing happens. Thank you "workbench"! You did it!! You found the one I hope to find--now for the pattern. The quilt that I've seen was made with all the blades alike and in bright pastels.
I'm guessing that it is put together like a "One Block Wonder" Janey - Neat people never make the exciting discoveries I do. Not affiliated with off-site link(s) |
I chased the one at the link around for a while. I finally found the free pattern. It's a little different from the one Janey found.
It's here on the Fat Quarter Blog. bkay |
Found it! I've sure seen a lot of pretty quilts while searching and am so pleased with all the help found here. Amazing group of quilters, you all are and so helpful.
There was something on Pinterest that somewhat clicked with a tiny snippet of the front of a magazine. Fons and Porter!! There is a free download of what to do with fat quarters. The construction is going to be easy (I think) using strip piecing and my 60 degree ruler that I purchased when I made several kaleidoscope throws. If you haven't done one of those--they are a lot of fun with lots of movement changing what you see in the finished product.(Kaleidoscope--not One Block Wonder) Of course, the search has put me now on daily emails from various places but we'll handle that in exchange for a free download of the pattern I've been hoping to find. More pretty quilts and some great articles among those! Thank you again to all who read/responded to my search. |
Oh two pieced triangle hex's! half hex's sewn in rows. Have fun!!!
|
Hard to say
I think there is an older pattern called 'Buzzsaw' that sounds similar to what you're asking, but again, it is hard to say, without a picture to reference.
|
You might try and search for the pattern on Quilter's Cache. I go on their website a lot looking for interesting patterns. Good luck to you
|
I found this to show cutting out 'all those' pieces, but I think I would rather sew two strips together and cut 60 dg triangles. So much simpler. Also would rather make and join the hexagons than trying to match up points using the half-hexie strip method, jmo.

The link as to a tutorial to show you how to make the blocks. You don't really need a pattern. I also noted that this was Part 3. If you go back and look at Part 1 and Part 2 plus the video, you should be able to make the whole quilt.
This appears to be the start of the sew along. https://www.aquiltinglife.com/2016/0...ter-shop.html/ |
