Looking for a quilt pattern to use a lot of different shade of solid white
I'm doing a major clean out of my scraps and I have a Ton of solid white leftover.
I use a lot of white in my quilts, but it's sometimes snow, sometimes bone, sometimes pdf white... so my scraps are various shade of white. I know what to do with low volume fabric scraps, I know what to do with grey leftovers, but I have no idea of how to use several shade of solid white in a quilt. I'm a very "controlled scrappy" girl; I don't like to have my quilts look scrappy, in fact ;) so I usually work with a very limited and specific color scheme. I would love to see your quilts made with different solid white scraps. My main goal for 2019 is to put a real dent in my extra large bin of white leftovers! |
I would use them in a strip quilt blocks like the Boxes Of Strings QB tutorial.

What about Converging Corners? Here is an example of a gorgeous scrappy-background one.

Ladies, thank you so much for your suggestions. I think a log cabin kind of quilt is the way to go to use those white scraps and make them look good. The Converging corner doesn't convince me (I love some symmetry in a quilt). But while looking for ideas, I've seen a Beads Log cabin (the colored section create a round shape). Now, that's my type of quilt!!! Any idea where to find a pattern for this (and will it require 100 hours of cutting?)
-Loisf, I know what you mean. I've done a three time a quilt that ended up with one single tiny piece of a slightly different white. It was not visible in my studio but it was on daylight! Each time, I was very upset, but each time, my customer didn't even come close to notice it. |
I love quilts with neutral shades. beige's and whites. I don't have a specific pattern in mind though. they always look so good even if simple.

This was made using five different shades of cream - placed randomly. The pattern in Snake River.

This is a gorgeous quilt, Cathy! I think it would be less beautiful with only one shade of white or cream - the multiple shades add some depth.

I cheated, with all my different whites, I turned them into the free table at Guild. I then proceeded to purchase two bolts of my favorite white fabrics. But I often use neutral batiks together without a problem, the more you add in the better the look.

Oooooh, I love the Converging Corners block. I may have to add that one to my list of scrappy quilts I want to make!
I think that using more than one shade of white/cream often adds more interest to your background areas. I agree that Cathy's quilt would not have been as stunning with only on white in the background. |

I used different shades of whites to make a crazy quilt and used different shades of whitish thread to do decorative stitches on each piece. Loved how it turned out but don't have a picture to share.

This blog has several mostly white quilts for inspiration I love the one she did all white and big stitch quilted with bright colored threads.

I often use a variety of white on whites in any kind of scrap quilts I make. Try looking at some Irish chain patterns. I was very pleased with the queen size quilt I made doing this.

There is one among patterns from SewCanShe this week that might work with your varied whites. The pattern is Proof Positive Quilt. It is shown with multiple + signs which alternate white and scrappy but perhaps it might work to use your whites as the feature with a constant fabric being where they have the scrappies.

I mixed up whites in this quilt just to get rid of scraps. I thought it made it look antique (totally unintentional). The judges at the state fair gave it a first place ribbon.

This quilt I found the pattern on quilters cache called "Pineapple2" here is the URL for you, if you're interested....... http://www.quilterscache.com/P/Pineapple2Block.html - I added in the white 6.5 inch, between the 6.5 inch blocks, using red/white with a purple center. Paper pieced pattern, good to use up those white stash scraps.

If you don't like scrappy, you might not like to use your different whites all in one quilt. But if you are making the quilt just to use up fabric you have and you intend to give it away, it doesn't so much matter how much you will like it, but rather if the recipient likes it! :-)
I did a couple of block swaps here on the Board (I did the Disappearing 4Patch swap more than once because my son liked my quilt so much that he asked for one like it), where we used white for the background of the block. We did not specify a particular white, or brand of fabric, so the participants in the swap used different shades of white, also some used white/on white--of which, of course, there is a huge variety! The pictures from a distance don't show the variances of white that much, but that's how it is in person too. You see that the background is white, it sort of blends all together to your eye, but on close inspection, you see the white/on white prints, etc. But isn't that how it is with all pieced quilts that use a variety of prints? Up close, you see what you see, and often, also, you remember what you remember. :-) I use cotton sheets from Goodwill, and lots of times the white ones are faded, sun-washed, or have colored to a pale creamish color in the center from use that can't be bleached out. I might cut some of the center out if it's worn, but if it's good quality fabric and has lots of life left in it, then I use it for 'scrappy white.' I love to find an old, but new in package, high quality muslin that is sooo white it looks almost pale blue. :-) It gives a great look when mixed in with the others. |
Thank you so much to everyone who have taken the time to comment. There is a lots of ideas, links and gorgeous quilts in this thread! This is very inspiring.

I found myself in the same position a year or two back and decided that I needed to expand my repertoire, stretch a little. I still have a hard time mixing whites and reds together, but I am glad I tried. I understand that it might not work for you, but What the hey! give it a shot.
