Looking for ruler

I hope someone can help me, I'm trying to make Eleanor Burn's Peony pattern from her Egg Money Book. She makes flying geese with 2 different sized sqs. sews corner to corner all 4 corners then cuts, uses some sort of flying geese ruler she makes. I'd like to use the usual flying geese which is easy. Hers is complicated and wasteful. Anyone??????

Then you don't really need a special ruler - take a rectangle, sew squares on two corners, trim and press. Much more wasteful than EB's technique.

dunster 08-30-2013 03:35 PM

I actually made flying geese on my last quilt using EB's ruler, and it wasn't wasteful or complicated. Only a couple of slivers of fabric were lost in the process, and the geese came out perfectly. I thought it was a big time saver over the methods that are completely waste-free. However, you can make geese using any method you like and the quilt will look the same.

Here is a video tutorial from Missouri Star Quilt Co on how to use Eleanor Burn's ruler. I think it makes more sense when you see someone doing the method

I don't think EB's method is wasteful at all. I use her method when
I have to make lots of FG. Of course you can use any method you like.

QuiltnNan 08-30-2013 04:22 PM

i agree that EBs method is not wasteful. i've wanted to get her ruler, but couldn't afford it early on. so i used a regular ruler just lining up the top and side measurements on my ruler. i'm so used to it now, i don't need to buy yet another ruler :)

Just watched the video tutorial re: El. Burns flying geese. Thanks for the info, now after seeing it makes sense. Just have to find the ruler.

Belfrybat 08-31-2013 06:55 AM

I like the no-waste method that is the second method on this tute:
http://www.connectingthreads.com/tut...hods__D15.html

It takes a bit of getting used to, but I hate the waste of the method described in the video or the rectangle/ small squares one.

berryberry 08-31-2013 06:57 AM

My only beef is she has a small and large geese ruler. You can get both for $14 or $7 a piece. Yet although it means keeping up with 2 rulers, even I can make perfect geese with her rulers. I haven't found there to be a lot of fabric waste, just keeping up with 2 rulers.

Belfrybat 08-31-2013 06:59 AM

Dunster and Berry -- when I've used that method, depending on the size of the geese, I end up cutting 1 inch off the side. How do you make your with less waste?

Kitsie 08-31-2013 08:09 AM

Here is a wonderful way for any size FG. No ruler needed!

The secret of the ruler is to get the 45 degree lines to match on the fabric and the ruler. You can do that with any ruler that has 45 degree lines on it. And be sure you have the 1/4 inch seam allowance above the point of the geese.

I really like the no waste method.

BellaBoo 08-31-2013 04:17 PM

It's not hard to find her products She has an online shop that sells her rulers, notions, books and fabric. She has great sales. I have the small flying geese ruler of hers. It works great but I like paper piecing flying geese blocks or use the one seam flying geese method.

snipforfun 08-31-2013 04:50 PM

Her rulers are at Joanns. Coupon??

patti p 08-31-2013 06:31 PM

I got mine at our local fabric store, I am learning how to use it today actually it works pretty good I plan on making a quilt making the Flying Dutchman block

I have the rulers, they still have the plastic wrap on them. Have never used them to make flying geese. My flying geese come out just fine without the rulers.

I really like the Eleanor Burns method, how ever you don't have to buy special rulers. You can use a regular 90 degree angle or square ruler. She even demo's this on one of her videos which are free to watch on her web site. Just goggle it. All you need to remember is to cut the sky piece one and a half larger than the geese piece. Once you Also her method down it is so easy to do. Watch the video, she is such a great teacher. She has lots of great short cuts as well. Also this is a big time saver as it makes four flying geese units at on time.

pocoellie 09-01-2013 06:04 AM

I've made Eleanor Burn's flying geese without a special ruler but I don't consider her method complicated or wasteful. It's just about the only way I make flying geese.

Thank you, I had seen this but forgot where. Still newbie enough to feel intimidated with them but I will try this. :-)

I have all her geese rulers and love them.
You make a lot of geese so why not have the tools that work for you.

imdelagarza62 09-01-2013 10:49 AM

I agree, I have all her geese rulers as well and there is very little waste.

sandraphippard 09-01-2013 09:00 PM

I have several different rulers for flying geese and find Eleanor burns to be the best and easiest to use, and there is very little waste.

I totally agree. I also have all her flying honkers rulers and all were bought on sale or with a coupon. Easy to use and I love having umpteen sizes ready to go.

I keep my "daily" rulers handy in my workspace; all the rest are in a see-through container. Easy to find and remember to use.
:)

BellaBoo 09-16-2013 10:47 AM

I buy any new ruler to try it out. That is the only way to know if it is a new tool that will save time, make it easier or be fun to use. I don't pay attention to the reviews of you don't need it. I'm not a make do type person when it comes to quilting, that's not fun for me.

Sheepshed 09-16-2013 11:39 AM

You can get the eleanor burns rulers when 40-50% off at joanns, very economical. Her method of geese is the least wasteful, easiest, and most accurate of any method I know LOL...

I have made hundreds of flying geese using EB method and I don't own any of her rulers. It is the only method that you can see that your seam is lining up properly and if it not, then you can make the tiny correction and you will have 4 perfect flying geese. It is a lot less waste then if you snowballed the corners (cut squares and stitch down the center). Now there is waste because you have to trim a 1/4" in from your seam. I have also made them in different sizes than her rulers would provide.

So, what is the ruler for?

Rose Marie 09-17-2013 06:12 AM

You make 4 at a time using two large squares of different sizes. There is a formula for figuring the size squares to use.
The ruler is used to square up the geese so they are perfect. Some sizes waste a little and others no waste.
