looking for something - maybe you guys can help
You folks here on the board are always so helpful, I wanted to ask for your help.
my nephew and his wife are expecting their first baby - so of course I am going to make a quilt :) they have boston terrier that was their first baby so I had the idea of incorporating her on the quilt. I am just picturing a small block on the back of the quilt - maybe as part of the lable. I saw this on etsy and it seemed perfect. I really like this one... until I read the fine print that it can't be washed https://www.etsy.com/listing/1948454...f=sr_gallery_6 Do any of you have any ideas of where some nice boston terrier fabric can be found? Not cartoony. I found a pillow cover on Amazon like but its 18" x 18" which is probably too big any thoughts? |
Just looked at your Etsy link. It does say that it can be made colorfast, probably by heat setting it with an iron. Can you ask the seller about it? It's very appropriate for what you want.

18 x 18 would work for me - just center it on the back. What is the fabric? How will it wash? Have you considered a picture of the dog? My son's quilt has a picture of his daughters on the back and it is washing just fine. And that boy is a frequent launderer who over dries things. He does use cold water.
|
Likewise, I would personalize the quilt with a photo of their own dog.
Plus, why hide it on the back? Make it the feature, up front, and build the quilt around it. |
I have not done it, but I have seen quilts that have actually been pieced to look like an animal, or person, or landscape. are you game to learn how to do it? must be a pattern you could purchase someplace....

I have messaged the seller and I will see what she comes back with.

I like the idea of it being on the back so its a little bit of a surprise. They will look at the quilt front and think that's it and then surprise the puppy will be on the back. I like quilts that have interest on both sides |

Your link says you can make it colorfast, but then says it has to be washed on gentle or dry cleaned. This is a baby quilt. It will get washed repeatedly.
So, I would cut the Boston Terrier out of the panel and use the rest somewhere else. https://www.fabric.com/buy/0467084/d...35-panel-cream https://www.fabric.com/buy/0467102/a...23-panel-cream These may be to "cartoony" for you, but there are lots of choices. https://www.etsy.com/search?q=boston%20terrier%20fabric bk |

Waiting to hear back from her how these will wash |
I used Printed Treasures (I think that was the name) fabric from JoAnn's and heat set the picture more than called for. It wasn't stiff at all and the picture has remained. I don't think the June Tailor fabric is as washable.

My new favorite is solar dye. It actually dyes the fabric so it stays soft and does not fade. It is not full-color, but I love the look. Check this out: Jacquard SolarFast Starter Kit . Here are a couple I have done. The one with the baby was on a tye-dye quilt, so I used more than one color. There is a learning curve, but I have been very happy with it and the recipients love the labels. (So far, that is all I have used it for, but I can see it for so much more.)

i was interested in your post of the color block until I read the care instructions. Personally I hesitate to give some thing that doesn't wash easily for a child. I did like the prints tho".

thanks everyone! I am learning alot here :)

Keepsake Quilting has Boston Terrier fabric in their new catalog. It is, however, a cotton/linen blend. But the description says it is also good for quilts. You could email them and ask if the fabric is machine washable.

A while back I wanted a picture of a schnauzer to put in a quilt. I ended up buying a panel with squares of all kinds of dogs. I figured I could use the rest in a child sized quilt. I still have a square with a Boston terrier on it, 6.5 inches. I'll try to attach a photo. If you want it, just pm me your address and I'll mail it to you. I'll still have enough squares to make my child sized quilt so don't really have to have that square.

You could also print a picture of their pup on fabric OR done it professionally by Spoonflower although that is probably more expensive.

No fading with the solar dye. My photos don't do it justice. check out the website.
