Ok, I have a hankerin' to make one of those big sunburst patterns. You know the ones with a bazillion long, skinny points that pretty much cover the whole bed? A center medallion style. I have a book with a picture of one, but no pattern. Have any of you seen a pattern for these? Probably too big for paper piecing. Maybe what I am looking for is the "mariner's compass" pattern, but somehow those don't look exactly right.

Oh, I love the Mariners Compass. Hope to make one someday. It's pretty intimidating.

quiltsmart has one that you piece to their preprinted foundation - i'm not sure what the final size of the medallion is.

it was on sale at create for less but i'm not sure if it is any longer.

Ok, these are similar, but I finally scanned a pic into the computer so you can see what I am talking about. I just have the picture, no pattern, in a book of "antique" quilts.

I have not seen any that large recently....maybe going to a LQS and going through their patterns/books/magazines? Or the library?

I have a Mariner's Compass book that I checked out from the library that gives step by step instructions. The patterns in the book are for up to a 32inch center medallion and are paper pieced. It is called Mariner's Compass Quilts, Setting a New Course written by Judy Mathieson

moonpi,

this appears to be off the air. that yahoo! group disbanded a while ago. i was very disappointed.

kluedesigns 05-01-2009 12:01 PM

i've never seen that pattern on the consumer market. it could be an original design by the quilt artist.

you could draft your own pattern based off of this picture. it could be done in EQ and the majority of the pattern could be foundation pieced so you could achieve those sharp points.

it would be very similar to drafting a NY Beauty except on a much larger scale.

Looks like they were moved here -

At least the pdfs look the same to me. Sorry, I need to clean up my bookmarks.

butterflywing 05-01-2009 01:43 PM

moonpi, i didn't mean you made a mistake. i meant that they left a while back and i was disappointed at that time. i only knew because it was a yahoo! group that i was signed in for.

the site you sent us to is very good. how in the world did you find it? is that a regular free pattern website?

i was under the impression that bookmarks changed as sites changed. so they are always up to date. i guess that's not true, but i have had sites go away that weren't valid anymore. or, bom's change each month to bring you up to date. i put this new one in as a 'save as' in finder. i have a mac.
i've never tried that before. we'll see what happens.

Thanks for the help, everyone!

I love this forum. :D

I believe the quilt in your picture was made by Helen Urie Rowell, the grandmother of Natalie Kinsey-Warnock, a children's book author from the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont. Her website: http://www.kinsey-warnock.com/ and a school presentation she did with the quilt :http://orchard.sbschools.net/library...nock/index.htm It has over 1000 points.

motomom 05-01-2009 09:40 PM

Hmmmm......

1000, you say? 1000 points? Sheesh, I never thought about counting them.

Well, we all need some LONG TERM projects!

Thanks for the info on that quilt!

motomom 05-01-2009 09:47 PM

I checked out this page, too

http://www.kinsey-warnock.com/

and realized that this quilt maker did not start quilting till she was in her 60's. Maybe there is hope for me after all, I feel like such a late bloomer sometimes.

what a talented family. thank you for sharing the links.

did you know that she was only 2 when she started that project and it has taken her this long to compete it? whew! (this is me, wiping my forehead!)

I believe this book will give you something that would satisfy your urge to make long skinny points. I have the book and will someday make a huge medallion compass star.

Thanks Loretta but I think the original poster is looking for something more complex than my little star block. It might be nice as a border or corner block though if done in complementary colors.

You have totally lost me I'm afraid. I don't understand what you are trying to say. Mrs. Rowell, the grandmother, made the quilt pictured and she did not start quilting until she was into her sixties.

It was humor.

i'm sorry ghostrider. i meant that the project was so intimidating and complex that it must have taken a very long time to accomplish.

didn't mean to confuse you

Royal Stars of the States by House of White Birches is a book full of huge star patterns. There isn't an exact match to your quilt but there are several that are pretty close, and then a lot more huge stars as well. Some are intricately pieced, others are not so tedious. I love this book!

Thanks, I'll check that out.
