Looking for suggestions

The guild I am in is having a challenge. We each had to select a crayon from a brown bag and now we have to make a wallhanging with that color predominantly noticeable in the project. My color was salmon. Would love to have some suggestions on what comes to mind when you think of the color salmon that would be doable for a wallhanging.

QuiltnNan 04-11-2016 07:50 AM

salmon has quite a range of shades. i googled it hoping some ideas would pop up. https://www.google.com/search?q=salm...w=1017&bih=685
predominantly noticeble? could this work [or something similar?] https://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl...act=mrc&uact=8

I have some fabric panels that is poppies (I think), or at least
flowers and the the main color is a medium salmon color.

Will post a picture tonight when I get home if you're interested
in seeing what it looks like.

I am doing the same challenge in my guild. I got brown and thought of pairing it with pink or salmon. Maybe do a fancy cut work heart or Celtic design

bjchad 04-11-2016 08:32 AM

Salmon usually looks nice with turquoise and white. Something southwestern would work with those colors.

I can see a wall hanging with appliqued flowers either all blooms same soft salmon or different shades
of salmon (not orange looking colors)

DOTTYMO 04-11-2016 10:05 AM

The immediate thought I got was a salmon the fish.

Our guild did the crayon/brown bag thing, but we pulled THREE crayons from the bag and had to use all three plus any one other color of our choice = less than 1/3 of the overall quilt. You should have hear the groans of dismay and disgust at some of the color combinations!! Yet the resulting quilts were amazing!!

My first thought was tulips! Various light to dark salmon plus another color with green stems.
Here is a tutorial for a wall-hanging:

The first thing that popped in my mind was flamingos! ;-)

The Pizza Girls have a pattern called Hollyhocks that would look good in shades of salmon. Although I do like the southwestern idea with turquoise.

tropical sunset, if you're doing a scenic wall hanging? You could applique silhouettes of palm trees in black as they'd be backlit by the sunset. I also love Kathy's suggestion of tulips.

We are doing the challenge with 3 colors plus addition of another color if you choose. PLUS you have to do something to represent your 3 initials. Can be a quilting technique, design or something else, My mind is still thinking. I got orange, mink and blueberry.

I thought of a sunset type of landscape wallhanging.

This is the Poppy panel fabric I mention in my earlier post.

Each panel is about 3"x7.5" I bought the fabric at Joann's
a couple years ago.

I was just noticing where you are from. I think an empty, tied up salmon colored boat on a dock with the background of the lake shore in the distance would be pretty and something the gals in your area could relate to and enjoy.

me too--a nice salmon salmon leaping up a greenish, brown river!

The first thing that came to mind was the beach. I love to hunt for seashells and many shells have salmon in them.

I have also seen a sunset in which the color salmon was predominant in the skyline.

My last thought was a flower garden or pot. There are many shades of salmon color flowers.

Have fun with your challenge and tell us what you decide.

jmoore 04-12-2016 03:10 AM

poppies are a great idea for a wall hanging, I'm sure there are many shades .. then you could add little touches of black, yellow, and cream.

Golfergal 04-12-2016 03:51 AM

I have been making silhouette wallhangings - 14 to 18 inches in size. You could you use graduated strips of pale to dark salmon, cutting your strips in varying widths from 3/4", 1", 1 1/2", 2" and do the sew and flip method. either put a small border or just bind it.For silhouette, I used pictures from a coloring book, cut design out of black fabric & stitched close to edge all around. They were fun to do.

Salmon reminds me of beachy colors - goes well with turquoise

I used to have salmon poppies in my garden. They were the most beautiful, delicate looking flowers. Do a google search using "salmon poppies" in the search field and then choose images. So many beautiful ideas.

Flamingoes!

That was my first thought too. Maybe it's from all the years I lived in FL.

I can see large petals on a giant flower (zenias or dallia) in the salmon color on a teal/ turquoise and white setting in a wall hanging. Kind of like artists do when they do a study of an object. Sorry, can't seem to spell anything today.

Bren 04-12-2016 12:11 PM

I think of salmon as being part of the "sherbet" range of colors along with shades of green, yellow, pink and peach. I picture these colors as pairs of flip-flops arranged randomly on an aqua fabric as the beach towel with wide salmon borders top and bottom. I have actually seen something similar and it was so cute.

newBe 04-13-2016 03:02 AM

Love the poppies; they POP!

zozee 04-13-2016 03:16 AM

You could do a really whimsical piece. My thought was a close-up of a big dog's face and his salmon-colored tongue hanging all the way out. Black lab, salmon tongue. Turquoise sky.

Oooh, I like that idea!

Are there any size or shape restrictions? What other colors do you like?
I think I would choose a pattern that I like which is illustrated in Christmas red and green, replace the red with salmon (the shade of the crayon) and the Christmas green with a dark teal or spruce blue-green.

There have been so many wonderful ideas shared here. Thank you! I will have to think about them for awhile before I decide what to do. Size of the quilt cannot be greater than 120 inches perimeter and we can add other colors of our choosing. Members were quite excited to participate.
