Looking for Traditional Danish Quilt Blocks
 

I found some at one time, but now I can't seem to find anything online anymore. I think I'd like to make a set of Danish quilt inspired placemats for my boyfriend's mother and sister-in-law for Christmas. They live in Denmark, close to the German border, and we'll be spending the holidays with them and his brother.

If anyone has a source even for photos of traditional squares, I'd be interested in looking at them.

I would think anything in red and white like the flag, or tulip and windmill blocks would be nice.

They will like anything you make for them. Just think they can probably get Danish patterns at anytime, why not something that is traditional where you are from?

When I visited in Norway, I always brought something typically "American". Alwayslearning is right - they can get Danish and German patterns and items easily.

I do agree with the above though, unless one is Really familiar with a country or culture it is easy to get it wrong.

I would mostly think of the colors, rather than the blocks used.

I would use Danish colors in a American style pattern.

I guess you're all right. I thought about maybe doing Danish flags for the backs, since they would be so simple to throw together. I've visited several times, but it is hard to know what to pick from their culture to sew. If I were doing cross stitch, Kronborg Castle (known as "Hamlet's castle" because it was the setting in Shakespeare's play), Eremitage Palace on the king's old hunting grounds (surrounded by red dear), or anything Hand Christian Andersen would be most appropriate.

So for a traditional American front, a log cabin or 9 patch? I'm not sure I have enough stash built up for much variety of fabrics for a log cabin, but I am going to Joann tomorrow so I can see what they have. If anyone has other suggestions for a good placemat block, I'm all ears!

I'm a little late for this party...! Danish Stars (I mean ONE Danish Star) is laid out on a 10x10 grid but I imagine a pattern could be adapted from the Arkansas Snow Flake (aka Cowboy Star on the web), or maybe even Job's Troubles, which, on the web, has each star point split down the middle. You'd have to turn that one on point, though.
