I love to paper piece and have found that I prefer vellum over all other options for 2 reasons: It becomes somewhat brittle after ironing and is very easy to tear from the blocks if I'm using the sew-through method of pping. It's also somewhat translucent, which makes it easier to find the seam lines if I'm using the fold-and-sew method of pping. Either method, I'm covered. My tip: placement of fabrics are key. I prefer the light/dark placement, I think it's more effective and dramatic. |
Whatever method you choose, definitely MAKE SURE YOU STAND UP TO IRON!!! Sitting down when ironing doesn't make a huge difference, but staying in a seated position for hours is not a good idea. I once did this when doing a pineapple block marathon, I figured I would adjust the ironing board down to the same height as the sewing table so I wouldn't have to get up and down, and after about 2 hours, I could barely stand! I now leave the ironing board at its full height and stand up to iron.

do you remember how long it took you for a block?

If you are unsure about this block, here is a link for Donna's Place http://quiltwithdonna.com/foldystuffpageb.html
She has a method of doing this that makes it so simple. |
Peckish, your pineapple quilt is beautiful! I also love all of the patterns at Laundry Basket Quilts. I may go with her paper piecing pattern and vellum, as you suggest. That way I can go scrappy and go sans starch.
