Love your design and I think they will too.

Dina 12-28-2011 07:49 PM

I like it!

I have nothing to add to your camo discussion but just had to mention how cute your kitty avatar is :)

That is Rusty. He was about 10 months old when this was taken. He was on top of a 10 foot ladder looking down. He is just a mischievous as the picture looks. He is 2 1-2 now and into any and everything.. worse than a 2 year old! LOL

I think your design is lovely, please post when your done, can't wait

glorcour 12-29-2011 07:03 AM

This is not a collection I would choose, but then again, it is not for me. I think you have done a great job with the block and can hardly wait to see the finished product. We could be wowed.

It sounds to me like none of the people involved will really appreciate the work anyway, so why not just sew the camo on the front and the orange on the back with a nice finish on the edges. Then when the baby is three or four and they throw it on the ground for their dog to lay on it won't matter so much. Just a thought.

Oh my ... how can you make that assumption?

OMG! Quite the opposite! My daughter loves what ever I create and wants me to start selling baby quilts. If anyone, she does appreciate what goes into making a quilt as she has been there from the beginning design, picking out the fabric, cutting and really appreciates the talent it takes to accurately sew the pieces together and have them come out with matching points and intersections, Oh she truly does appreciate this as she says " I can't do this, I have tried and I have given up!" This was a challenge, and she knew it before asking as she knows I can't resist a challenge or one of her requests.

I would have never picked this combo of fabrics, but I think it turned out nice, it even surprised my DH who thought I was not going to come up with anything that would look good. Just goes to show that you can make any fabric look good if you make a Dresden plate!

I fully intend this to be pitched onto the ground and have the baby play on it, I wouldn't have it any other way!! It, as the baby, are 100% washable!! LOL I make my quilts to be used and I don't put a restriction on their use as long as they get used and not hidden away in a closet.

Off to work on the blocks!

materialgrl 12-29-2011 12:10 PM

I agree, i want all my quilts to be used and loved and dragged around, I love your final draft

patdesign 12-29-2011 05:07 PM

Forget the pink, go instead for a yellow, pale green, or pale blue or apricot (since they said they liked orange). I made 2 log cabins for gifts this christmas, both were blue log cabins and both had some denim in them. The fabrics were many different weights, and I used the stitch and flip method to construct individual blocks and the denim centers were embroidered. Fortunately both quilts were well received and I felt my time had been well spent.:)

OK, here it is, the top at least. The quilting will happen tomorrow. I posted a picture on facebook and got a long awaited call from my daughter :) So nice to talk to her, we killed 2 phone cards LOL She loves it and thinks it will be loved as well! So here it is:

(btw, I think it is the ugliest quilt I have ever made! ROFL)

Most of the new mothers I've been around want quilts for their babies that aren't traditional baby quilts. My cousin wanted "chocolate & lime green." My DDIL wants stars. My DD wanted browns for her DD. Their friends also want different colors for their babies that surprised me. When they received their quilts (or in the case of friends 42" x42" blankets) they loved 'em in the colors of their choice. You made an awesome quilt & they should love it. (I personally can't stand orange.)

MadQuilter 12-29-2011 07:30 PM

There are quite a few 2-color blocks out there, so it would be a matter of finding one that doesn't have too small pieces to accommodate the slightly heavier twill. As for the rag quilt - I'm not sure the twill will rag properly.

And you should see this orange when the sun hits it.. OMG! who turned on the lights LOL Guess that is why it is called safety orange..

I "think" I saw RealTree Camo at Hancock's. I know I saw Mossy Oak Camo. And to confuse things further, each of these brands come in different patterns, usually indicating the foliage found in fall and spring and also depending on what area of the country you are "hunting" in to blend with the terrain. We had the Mossy Oak developed here in MS so it's quite easy to find. The RealTree is a different manufacturer but it is readily available here in MS also. Sometimes, you can find the fabric itself at the hunting goods stores. I used to work for a Hunting Call Developer and we had all the camo products.

If you didn't have the "orange" fabric already, you can get the true "orange hunting fabric" at the fabric stores. It's the same weight as the Camo fabric in most cases since it is used to make vests to wear over the hunting shirts, jackets, etc.

My son and grandson have a closet full of the camo apparel. I used to have several shirts which I wore to trade shows but I gave them away since they has my name embroidered on them. Never thought about keeping them to cut up for quilts....oh well!!!

Annaquilts 12-29-2011 11:04 PM

Yes this and maybe no batting or polly only.

I'd follow the request. And keep to JUST the "official" orange addition.

Keep it simple ... leave the camo as is, for the front or back of the quilt. with orange on the flip side. Then bind it in an orange. Then do your quilting in the orange .... perhaps that's where you could "baby-ify" it ... do the quilting in animal shapes? alphabet? baby's birth info (eg. date, weight, height, city, parents names)? etc?

Re Log cabin etc. ... I think you may be frustrated with the work you put into it, and then it not showing, when it's all the same fabric.

Good Luck!

I have made a quilt that has the braid look for borders. I know it can also be used just as vertical stripes. You could do this with coordinating colors, either green and brown, or grey and white, or what ever color the chamo they have sent you. Then I think I would put a very small strip of orange separating the braids. I personally think you arent going to enjoy doing this quilt, so make one that you can finish quickly!

Pepita 12-29-2011 11:49 PM

Oh, camo has changed. Camo is camoflage for the area that the soldier or hunter is in. In the artic it is white, and grey. For the dessert it is the color of sand. You get the idea.

Fabriclovr 12-30-2011 09:17 AM

PERSONAL OBSERVATION: I truly appreciate all of the comments, but does no one read through the entire post or the complete post? I posted the completed top and I am still getting comments on where to find the fabric or what type of pattern I should use and even a description as to what camo is.. I don't understand why people are still posting after the fact that it is already done. Can someone enlighten me on this?

Yes, camo has changed! My daughter has 3 differant types depending on the duty she is standing. On the water, she is in her blue digies, on the land, she is in her green camos, at the beach, she can be either in her sand or her blue. She is an MA2, Petty Officer, 2nd Class, Master at Arms (military cop) so she is everywhere on the island, so depending on her duty that night, she could be standing watch on a hillside or arresting shoplifters at the PX! AND she has her office uniform when she is on duty as the night supervisor... she has more military 'camo' than we do regular street cloths, so I know camo and have sewn her rank on each and every one of them.

As for this baby quilt, it is for her friend who loves to hunt, hens the RealTree camo that they choose from the RealTree Website and sent to me. The finished top is posted above.

:)

I sincerely apologize for responding to your post. I was one who had not read to the end which I usually do but I have had my very active DGD here so I took a chance and responded. You can certainly choose NOT to read any further on your thread, of course, but lots of times other posters follow threads for information for themselves.

I believe there is an option (check with PatriceJ) where you can "lock" your thread if you don't want any further comments. Once again, I sincerely apologize for offending you!!

You did not offend me, it was, as I stated, it was an observation of many so many threads I have read on this board. No one takes the time to read the entire thread and makes comments based solely on the 1st post. Guess I am questioning why someone would make a comment on a thread without reading the whole thread and all the responses first.

This board is so big that sometimes it's hard to read everything. I personally try to only reply to a thread that I've read every post but that isn't always possible. If I haven't read every post, I now will state that I haven't read it all. But when I first joined the board I didn't. I usually find that my reply has changed if I read everything. Most threads that have multiple pages I just read the first few pages then go to another thread. I do understand when people post without reading the rest of the thread.

Wow, you work fast. The top is really nice. The colors go together really well and nothing is too overpowering.
Glad you daughter likes it.

valsma 12-31-2011 12:31 PM

Although it isn't something I woul choose color wise, I really like the way you did it. Looks lovely. Great job.
