Lost my marbles...

I can't think today,,,,if I use 4 1/2 blocks, how big should the white triangles be with the fold and trim method???

Barb in Louisiana 09-20-2017 10:23 AM

If the fold & cut method you are referring to is like making flying geese, then I would assume that your normal formula for 2x4 inch finished FG is cut a rectangle 2 1/2 x 4 1/2 with a square of 2 1/2" for the corner. So I am guessing your squares should be 2 1/2". Someone will post a better method if I am wrong.

yep, 2 1/2 inches. just think of half the size of your square. 4 1/2 in half is 2 1/2 (for the corners)

Half of 4-1/2" is 2-1/4" . Sorry to but in but, dividing fractions is easy for me.

I was sitting here wondering if my brain was so tired it wasn't working right. I knew 2 1/4 was half or 4 1/2!

Phyllis...You are right and it came to me after I asked the question....my mind has been mush since my hubby passed and I have lost my home too,so I'm not functioning the best!!! Thanks all!!

Caroline, when I saw the name of your thread I immediately started to chuckle at what it would be. I've been losing my marbles steadily for awhile hahaha! :D

Wouldn't the small square need to be larger than 2 1/4? I'm in a fog too at the moment, but if you used this size, there would be no 1/4" seam allowance at the top. I would be inclined to use at least a 2 1/2" square with the 4 1/2"

The blue line is the cutting line.

Gay, that's what I was thinking, too--that HSTs aren't as simple as "1/2 the size of your square" . They're bigger, usually by 7/8 to 1" bigger, right? I could be way off, here, as math and I aren't friends, and the clock says nearly midnight.
Confusion is never out of the question between my ears.

If you are still able to attempt quilting after losing your DH and your home, then you are doing well. I would be in a straight jacket somewhere in the back of the asylum.

Sorry you have had such a rough year....praying for you!

SusieQOH 09-21-2017 05:47 AM

Caroline, I didn't read the part of losing your husband and home, I'm so sorry :(
Glad you're keeping busy and I forgot to mention that I really like that block.

kayluvs2quilt 09-21-2017 10:29 PM

Sending prayers and hugs to you ~ this has been a really rough year for you. You are one strong woman!

laurilli 09-22-2017 09:16 AM

Caroline, so sorry to hear of your losses, hope things can turn around for you now. As for the measurements I think
2 1/2 would be right half of 4 1/2 is 2 1/4 but add back in 1/4 seam allowance, JMHO

Believe me I have been in my own personal asylum...only knowing the love of my life is no longer sufering and that he told me to carry on as we would be together soon in Heaven. He loved my quilts and encouraged me to not stop after he was gone.

sewbizgirl 09-24-2017 10:01 AM

Yes, you use 2.5" squares to 'corner' a 4.5" square.

So sorry for your loss.

zozee 09-24-2017 10:12 AM

Never mind what I said . SHould have kept my mouth shut because I wasn't think about the cornering method.

How did you lose your house?
