love paper piecing!!!

Just figured out how to paper piece - oh my! A new addiction for me! Granted I am starting out with a very simple pattern but i just LOVE how everything lines up. Started making a cute santa ornament. Next I found a pattern I want to try to do to make coasters. My sister (who helped create the quilting monster i became according to my dh) told me I would love it and she was so right. Now I get to show her how to do it on Saturday. We are planning a sewing day to work on our projects and use up some of the fabric we are buying on Black Friday! This week I have been on vacation and it is going by sooooo fast. I wanted to get so much done but as ususal it isn't getting done but I am having fun and the most important thing is I am relaxing.

I like paper piecing, it is so exact. What I didn't like, was the removing the bits of paper after you sew. My sewing room floor looked like the day after New Year's Eve. Does anyone have a better way to remove the paper?

ontheriver 11-23-2011 05:25 AM

I just got the hang of paper piecing a couple of months ago and I too love it. I just did a pp log cabin lap quilt that came out so nice and even. Working on pp flying geese border for a child's quilt right now.

Welcome to the wonderful world of paper piecing! If you haven't already, be sure to check out Carol Doak's website. She is the queen of paper piecing and has LOTS of free patterns on her website. Have fun!

ragqueen03 11-23-2011 05:29 AM

Going into my sewing room right now to practice some more:)

QuiltnNan 11-23-2011 05:55 AM

i have yet to try it. everyone loves it and they do turn out so well. i think i'll sit and play after the holidays :)

I love paper piecing and am working on three different Crazy Quilt tops at the present.....I do hate taking out the paper! I know there are thinner papers, wash away paper, and, that I should shorten my stitch (but I haven't).

catladyquilts 11-23-2011 06:12 AM

my sister and I plan sewing days and we have so much fun, we plan a project and then just sew and sew and sew. we are already looking forward to the next one.

Carol Doak also has a yahoo group that is wonderful. I am also just learning to paper piece and just recently joined her yahoo group and we just finished a twisting mystery quilt that she just did starting in Sept. It was so much fun and it turned out to be a 44" (I think) sq but could be made bigger by adding more borders. She adds a lot of new blocks when the group reaches so many members and she just added a 7500 member block that looks really cool but I haven't had time to try it yet.

Have fun paper piecing, it is a lot of fun but I agree I hate the mess of taking the paper off the back

When I got my first paper piecing book a long long time ago .. it sat for more than a year... Then I "played" one day... OMG... LIFE CHANGING!!! It is an addiction to the perfection you can achieve ! So glad you discovered how marvelous it can really be. I will gladly deal with the mess from the paper removal in exchange for the results.

Mad Mimm 11-23-2011 07:18 AM

I am right there with you - I recently tried it and fell in love too! It is like pulling back a curtain and revealing a whole new world of possibilities, and I LOVE LOVE LOVE that the points and intersections come out so perfectly. What a de-stresser!!! Have fun!

I love paper piecing. I just use plain old copy paper, the cheaper the better and shorten my stitches to 1.5 on my machine.

Nanaof4 11-23-2011 08:04 AM

I love pp too. All your blocks come out just right, no worry about the correct size seam.

Val in IN 11-23-2011 08:48 AM

I love pp too. To make it easier to get the paper off, I shorten my stitch length, then when the block is done, I use a child's water color paintbrush and brush the seam with a little bit of water. Paper tears right off.

Val in IN 11-23-2011 08:51 AM

Addition to post above: I brush the BACK of the block on the PAPER with water. I re-read my post and I saw where some might be confused and brush water on the front seam line.

Great tip! I'm anxious to begin paper piecing, too. I've been collecting templates and look forward to the results. All the quilts I've seen with pp look so great. I'm kind of a perfectionist so this is right up my alley...LOL!

once you're addicted to paper piecing, there is nothing else to make the project so perfect. Enjoy your new found quilting.

I have been quilting for many years but just started paper piecing this year and I love it too. I joined 2 BOM's here in January. One is a star block and the other house blocks. I felt like pulling my hair out at the beginning but once I got the method I was off and running. Check them out. The more patterns the better!!

Earleen 11-23-2011 07:11 PM

I must have a mental block with PP just gets me so upset trying it. Had to do a block for an exchange and took me for ever. What is the trick to it?

Sandra in Minnesota 11-23-2011 08:13 PM

When I get tired of quilting, I love to paper piece. It can be a small project like a hot pad or runner and they come out so nice and even. Usually everything lines up perfectly.

Awesome! Paper piecing is cool. I am planning to make a few big pp'd projects next year...
It is really cool. I think it's one of those things that once you get it, you love it... but while you are learning to do it and it hasn't clicked yet, you are frustrated beyond belief. I'm glad you stuck through the learning curve :)

I use the freezer paper method...you don't sew through the paper.

quiltsillysandi 11-26-2011 05:05 AM

I'm new to paper piecing and purchased Carol Doak's Beginner CD..It's well worth the money.....Lots of good tips on this CD....She's fabulous and her website is great as well....

I am really glad that so many of us like paper piecing, personally I will likely never do it again, even when I look at all the clever items others have made. And isn't it a good thing we don't all like the same thing, who wants to live in a cookie cutter world. piecefully, the old one

lizzyq 11-26-2011 05:56 AM

Paper piecing is great for mini quilts and all their tiny little pieces. Save all scraps for this technique!

gellybean402 11-26-2011 06:07 AM

I am so envious of you and your sister sewing together! I tried to get one of my sister's interested but she just keeps saying she isn't talented enough. .. ~Sigh~ Guess I will just have to sew by myself. I also want to learn paper piecing as well. I am so glad to hear it is fun!

I also have another sister that just isn't interested in sewing at all! We keep trying to lure her in but I think I may give up on her. She enjoys working with woodcrafts and painting. One year when cabbage patch dolls were all the craze she made each one of us a wooden tri cycle to set them on. Maybe we should start a business we could make the dolls and stuffed animals and she could make the tri cycles and chairs to put them on- light bulb moment!
