Lumpy Pattern
 

This pix is my first block of a diamond pinwheel pattern and it’s far from perfect so please excuse. The block is made with first the upper portion, then the lower portion and then joined together. Where the points meet in the middle, there’s a lump…I mean a lump. The directions say to press the seams toward the red for each half. Got it. At that point there isn’t a lot of bulk in the center, but when I join the bottom to the top------------lump! For the center seam it says to press the seam open. That does little good because by then all points have converged in the middle and...........lump! Any suggestions?

Here's a pix of the back. I pressed the middle seam open (or tried to) until I got to the middle and hit the knot. I forgot to add--I cut off the little wings that were left after the points were joined. Could that be it? The instructions didn't say to cut them off but it seemed like I should.

For me it works better when I press all the seam allowances in a swirl -- either clockwise or counter clockwise.

I will play/ work with this tomorrow. I have some ideas/ thoughts - but I want to see If the actually work out.

This usually works for me, too.

I'm a swirler too. Also, taking out the one or two stitches in the seam allowance side of the centre point helps the swirl. Once that is done, putting the block on a small wooden board, I put just the point of the iron on the wrong side of the centre point to press the heck out of that lump. Then turn over to give a final press.

You can find lots of videos and pictures of how to swirl the seam online.

Once you have ‘swirled’ use a finger to put the tiniest amount of water where the seams meet - just enough to dampen the fabric slightly - then press as Bobbinalong suggests.

After you have done that putting the block under a heavy book for a few hours or over night can help too.

I use a hammer and whack them until the lump flattens out. This is an old tailor’s trick that works very well for me.
