Jane Quilter: I had to Google wing needle and heirloom stitch. I never knew!!! My manual gives I fo for some of the specialty stitches but not all.

Your machine does the blanket stitch. Pattern #26, look on page 48 of your manual, Applique.

About 20 years ago I attended a machine applique class and liked the blanket stitch used by the owners of Bernina machines. I was using my Singer 401A and was disappointed because it did not have a blanket stitch. After the class when I was home, I looked at my machine and it has a blanket stitch. I did not recognize it and I think I really wanted an excuse to buy a newer machine. That was my excuse to buy a Husqvarna Viking Designer 1 machine.

I had the same issue a few years ago. My New Home didn’t have a blanket stitch. So I bought an inexpensive Singer at Joann fabrics. It does a great job.

Which stitch is a blanket stitch on the 401. I have one of those!

Thank you. That is the one I tried that looked too heavy. Maybe I need a lighter weight thread than I was using.

I found a photo on Printerest of the raised part of a 401A showing all of the stitches that can be created. BO is the blanket stitch. The stitch width can be determined by moving the red stitch width lever. Unfortunately, my 401A is on top of a 3 foot storage unit and has many items on top of the 401A. Hope the above information is helpful. Margaret53, if you need additional information, please let me know.
