machine embroidery
 

I want to get brave and try this but afraid of messing up a quilt. When I bought my embroider machine last weekend the sales woman said lots of people use a large embroidery hoop from any fabric store and just keep moving it from area to area. Has anyone ever done this and is it successful.

I have done it but it sure is time consuming. Looks good but does take time.

What the sales woman is describing sounds like FMQ using a hoop. You need to purchase the correct hoop for your machine to embroider a design or use an embroidery design to quilt a sandwich.

I have the Husqvarn Saphire sewing machine and she said they but just regular embroidery hoops and use them to help guide, I Guess, while quilting. I would think it would keep the backing tight even though I used 300 pins on my last one and still had issues with the backing

The lady is talking about Free Motion embroidery. You can do it without an embroidery machine. It's the same as QAUG ,but you do embroidery. You can cover a design with embroidery thread or draw you own design. There are lots on you tube about how to do it.

Yes free motion but using a regular embroidery hoop that I would go to the local fabric store and buy. Just wanting to know if anyone has done that. I don't have any idea how to draw a design was just going to wing it I guess. I can't take classes so pretty much wing everything.

When embroidery machines first came out they only had a 4x4 hoop. There were instructions on how to split a really large design, mark and move hoop. They did whole jacket backs that way. Someone did a full American Eagle on a jacket. Now you can have your software split the file - add a jump or marking stitch to line up on and keep going.

Pfaff's continuous hoop designs work that way, and using that technique with the placement stitch I have split large Babylock designs and used the Grand Hoop, which you reverse rather than rehoop.

Marking templates are still available.

I am talking about quilting my quilt using a hoop to help with the free motion quilting but thank you for the tip on the software splitting files. I just bought the Brother PE770. I do hope I will be able to learn to use it on my own without too much difficulty and find the right threads to buy and so forth but right now concerned with my quilt top.

free motion quilting not embroidery. Sorry I did not see that when I read your reply. This is only for a quilt not embroidery.

I have a Brother SE400, which is similar to the 770. I do FMQ but never considered using a hoop. I think the hoop would be confining and time consuming. When I FMQ I section off in my mind what area I'm going to do...usually a block at a time. The 4x4 hoop would not cover the area. Then you would have to stop, take off the hoop, restart. Just forget the hoop with FMQ.
