I was wondering if it's OK to do a combination of machine piecing and hand piecing a quilt top. Are there any drawbacks to doing one that way?

Just thought that if I wanted to take a few pieces with me (portability) and hand sew a few pieces when not at my sewing machine, and then also doing machine piecing when the machine is handy.

Would that be OK or not? Thank you for your opinions and suggestions.

Sounds like a great idea to me. Can't see any reason not to :D

I do it...as long as your seams are consistant between hand and machine, there shouldn't be a problem! :)

I've never tried it, but it should be okay...no quilt police here!

i do it all the time, i work on hand areas at work during the week, when i'm home i machine piece other parts. most people have no idea unless i tell them that most of their quilt may have been hand pieced with just the borders added by machine. big quilts i machine quilt and do a normal binding so all of my quilts have hand and machine components.

At the Quilt show in Uk I have seen tops machine pieced and had quilted, and they won prizes, so it must be accepted by the quilt police!!!!!!!!!!!! It is what I plan to do next.

I don't see any problem with that. Show us a pic when you are done.

Years ago my Grandmonther hand pieced the blocks then machined sewed them together. Sure kept us warm for many years.

Thanks for all the input - sounds like it's an OK option to machine piece and hand piece on same quilt top. That sure opens the way for not being glued to ones sewing machine for all the pieced sewing. My machine is in a small basement room and on nice days or, to be able to take parts of it with me to hand sew some pieces together when I want to, would be nice to do sometimes.

Thanks again.
