Do most of you machine or hand stitch your batting pieces together when piecing leftover batting? I'm preparing a doll quilt and, of course, don't have the correct size batting, so I thought I would ask the experts... I looked at the tutorials, but I wanted to see what most of you thought?

(This doll quilt came from a small kit I found in my mom's quilting things... she'd bought it at the Smithsonian and never put it together... I'm going to use it as another practice piece for my hand quilting...)

I use my rotary cutter on the two batting edges to get them perfectly straight. Then I machine zigzag them together. Works great.

I use batting tape but before that was available, I zigzagged the batting pieces together using a machine.

I like to zigzag odd ends. Goes super fast!

I use a zigzag stitch when I piece my batting. Sometimes I am lazy and just overlap the edges and zigzag down the center of the overlap. I just finished a quilt with the batting done like this and you couldn't tell it was overlapped or pieced when it was finished.

I am lazy, my theory, spray it with quilt basting spray and it works.
Meticulous work is something of the past for me.

You need to make sure the two line up perfectly straight and flat ... or after joining, you'll have bumps and lumps ... which will affect your final result.

And definitely, do not overlap, or again, bumps and lumps you don't want to deal with.

Well, I did it!! Thank you to everyone who helped!! I love you all!! I did what you said and overlapped two pieces gently, then used my rotary cutter to cut a line, then zig-zagged it... worked like a charm!!!

You all made it sound easy... gave me the confidence I needed!!

Now to get to the hand-quilting practice...

I machine zig zag. I've used the zig zag to put together enough "scrap" batting into a queen size quilt.

This is the method I have used as well.
