Machine making funny noise

My machine is making a clunking sound sometimes, only when zig-zaging. Does anyone have any ideas what the problem might be? It's a Viking Emerald 116. Thank you!

When my Janome starts making noises, it's one of three things:
1. it needs a new needle (it should be a new needle for every 8 hours of sewing you do on your machine
2. the bobbin case is compacted with lint
3. the whole bottom of the sewing machine is linted up and I need to take it apart, clean and oil the parts.

My Singer 778 started making a strange noisse a couple of days ago. DH took apart & cleaned inside. I clean (dust) bobbin area every time I fill a bobbin or change thread,so I knew that was not problem He said I wore it out. After cleaning noise was still there then started skipping stitches. My reverse button is not working, something slipped or broke. If he can not fix it It will have to go to DR. Fortunately I have back up machines. I'm pressed to get a couple of project finished for craft show this weekend and finish Christmas presents.

I have a Viking Sapphire 875Q - when it starts clunking - the first thing is change the needle, then I will check the bobbin area for lint buildup - if it continues then I change the thread - sometimes it just doesn't like that particular spool. Also - make sure the thread holder is holding too tight on the thread - if the thread isn't feeding off easily - it can cause problems. I hope you find the source.

is your needle in the center position to start with?

Sometimes you just have to give in and take for repairs.
