Machine skipping stitches only while fmq/help
 
My Pfaff 7570 has started skipping stitches while fmq. I have cleaned it, oiled it, changed needles and thread and fiddled with the tension. I've done everything Mr. Google has suggested.I don't know what else to do. The machine has been a workhorse but it is 16 years old. Do any of you have any advice. I can't really afford to buy another machine right now. As always, thank you for your help.

try a larger needle.
that will often solve the problem for me.

Oh dear, I feel your pain. My Bernina 440 had to go to the shop for skipped stitches during FMQ. It was the timing and it is now good as new. The technician asked if I had check my other stitches and I had only checked my walking foot( skipped) and my FMQ ( skipped) and regular straight stitch. He said it wouldn't zig zag at all. Try your other fancy stitches and if they are skipping too, you will probably need the timing fixed.

The other possibility is that you're pulling the fabric a little too fast, so the needle is being deflected slightly. If that happens it isn't in the right position to make a stitch, so the stitch is missed.

ITA on switching to a different size needle.
I had that problem last week, and that resolved the problem.

It also could be the thread ... try a totally different thread and see what happens.

Skipped stitches when FMQing is usually due the needle bending as you move the quilt. Slow down a little and give the needle a chance to do its job. The needle is not coming out of the fabric all the way before it gets moved to the next stitch This causes the needle to flex and miss contact with the hook just enough to cause a skip. Try using a top stitch or metallic needle.

EDIT: Try the simplest and easiest things first before having it seviced. If all these tips fail then take it in.

yep, you move slowly and the foot pedal faster. calm moving of the quilt should help.
