The featherweights I have and have seen are not really light! I bought one from sears, looks like a child's and it sews very well and is very light weight. The cost was $30 online and I like it.

depends on what kind of project (quilting,piecing) etc you are gonna do in class. If just straight piecing then a simple machine will do. If machine applique then the same except one that has zig zag. However, if class in machine quilting, it is best to have your larger machine as the smalle ones don't give good results.
But whichever you take besure you know its ins and outs. take the manual and all accessories needed. Ive had students come to class without the plate that covers the bobbin. Also the extension table. Too many arrive at class without all they need to do the projects. I've had students come to class without the necessary walking foot and say they thought they would try it before buying the foot.......

You are right, the 301 is a great machine. I have a 222K and all I have to do to embroider, etc. is flip the lever from sew to darn. Maybe it is because mine is a later model, 1960

I also have the Jem Gold for classes and have the 6500 for at home, and thanks for the input for the interchangable feet. Didn't know that.

At home I sew on a Bernina 730. I just bought a Bernina 380 (not to be confused with the 830!!!!) for going to classes. There are 3 machines in the new 300 series...320, 350 and 380. I like mine alot and it does a great job.

Jem "mie" has needle up/down. She can also do FMQ on smaller pieces, like runners, parts to purses. A great machine. I have also been introduced to baby Audrey by Baby Lock. Less expensive, but haven't tried it at a class yet.

I have 4 sewing machines, but always take my Janome Gem when either taking a class or going to a quilt retreat. It's a sturdy little machine and does a great job with all quilting techniques.
