Magnetic Pin Cushions and Computerized Sewing Machines
I have read before on this board that magnetic pin cushions might cause problems with the electronics of a computerized sewing machine and I have avoided using a magnetic pin cushion or parts bowl because I was worried that I might mess up my machine, but if other folks are using them without problems I would love to be able to have at least one for my straight pins.
Has anyone here that uses a magnetic pin cushion or parts bowl had any problems with their computerized sewing machine because of the magnets? |
I would first check your machine manufacturer or manual to find if there is any information on not having magnetic items around your machine.
I have been using a magnetic pincushion and a magnetic seam guide on mine for a number of years and have to date had no problems. I have used it with Brothers and Juki and Singer without a problem. It will be interesting to know what others have done or avoided. |
The computer parts are shielded inside the machine. A magnet will not hurt the machine being close to it is what I was told by a few techs.

I asked at my sewing machine shop and the tech and owner both said you'd need a magnet that picks up cars to mess with modern machines. If They said it, I believe it.

Basic magnetic stuff you can buy in a regular store I wouldn't worry about. I have a fairly strong magnet that I use on a string to pick up pins, I keep it stuck to one of the feet of my sewing table.
Super strong specialty magnets are typically owned by people who know what they are doing or why they have them. Or, if you've ever taken out the magnet from a computer hard drive, well, I wouldn't stick that on a computerized machine but there probably isn't enough metal in the case of the machine for a good connection anyway. |

Please go right ahead with the pin cushion. I have 3 of them in use all the time without issues.

They use magnetic hoops with machines. Also the type of drive used in the machines is not the same as years ago so it is not affected by magnetics. I use magnetic hoops, pin cushions seam guage, no issues whatsoever.

I don't have computerized machines. I use a regular pin cushion. Works for me.

Has anyone here that uses a magnetic pin cushion or parts bowl had any problems with their computerized sewing machine because of the magnets? When I bought my new Bernina machine a few years ago, it came with a magnetized stylus to change the stitch selections. So, I figure if they sold me a magnet to sit on the front of the machine case, it can't be doing any harm. I also have 3 magnetized pin cushions and have never had an issue with them. |

Thank you everyone for your help and advice. I couldn't wait and went to Harbor Freight last night and got a magnetic wand for picking up pins (can't believe I didn't already have this tool) and a 6" magnetic parts bowl. I'm also on the hunt for cute dishes to make my own magnetic pin dishes.

Thank you all for discussing this! I hadn’t really given it any thought. Shame on me!
|
They make magnetic hoops to be used on sewing/embroidery hoops that are very strong. If that doesn't interfere with the computer in your machine, I doubt that a magnetic pin dish would either. That being said, I would place the pin cushion near the machine, but not "on it".

My hubby bought mea magnetic pin holder which I love, I’ve had it sitting next to my Viking for 3-4 years now without any problems. I was worried at first but then asked at my dealers shop and found out they use them too

Irishgal here's a cute magnetic dish:
https://www.etsy.com/listing/7364995...r_gallery-3-23 I guess you could make any cute dish/plate magnetic with a little magnet glued to the bottom. |
