I Love them. From the first second I saw a quilt made with them. And there probably aren't many I don't like. When ever I am looking for fabric for a new quilt. I try to look at everything, but my eye goes right to the batik. I love the way you can use colors that you wouldn't think would work together, and with batiks they just all seem to blend together.

I love batiks - and those that technically are really more of a wax-resist type design. But - a big but - a lot depends on the fabric itself. I don't like the loosely woven cheaply made stuff. I love the soft fabric that might cost a little more. I've gotten a lot on sale, a lot at Marden's (super place!) and even bought full price if it's something I really loved (like the border to the first quilt picture I'm posting.) I've recently pared down my stash of everything to fabric I love and my actually someday use (still hundreds of yards) in an effort to organize my work space. If the batiks you are seeing are stiff and hard - maybe its the material. But, maybe you may just not like the looks. My daughter loves them - as you can see below - she not only claimed the mystery quilt I made a year ago (first photo), she had her aunt make her a batik quilt to hang on her wall. She's expecting, and if I get up enough gumption, I saw a baby quilt called "Baby's Trip to Bali" that I just might try out - using pastels.

I personally do not like Batik, but I am in awe at all of the beautiful, creative quilts that some of you here on the Board have made

They aren't so "in your face" as so many of the fabrics being produced for the younger "modern" quilter, nor are they the cutsie calicoes of years past.

What's so great?
They feel so luxurious, almost like silk.

Why do you like them?
They are wonderful to work with. They take a press nicely; seams lie very flat. They come in a variety of designs from blender-like patterns to some with designs that stand out.

make me like them!! I see so many pretty quilts with them, but I just don't know.. am I defective or the only quilter here that doesn't like them?

You are getting sleepy, very, very sleepy . . . You like batiks! You like batiks! You like batiks! You love batiks.

No one can make you like them. I didn't like them at all in the beginning of their existence, but now, after having worked with them, I would rather work with them than other fabrics. Connecting Threads has batiks that are great quality and loads cheaper than others. I love using black as my background fabric & batiks just stand out so proudly against the black.

No one is going to ban you from the quilting worls because of your personal choice. That's what is so great about quilters - we attack the Quiltzillas we encounter!

The thing we all need to remember is that we are supposed to be having fun, not feeling guilty about our preferences. Now, go out there and HAVE FUN!

Do you get any fabric catalogs in the mail? Keepsake Quilting catalog is my favorite; it is chockful of pictures of gorgeous quilts, many of them using batiks. That would be a start for you. If you do not get the catalog and would like to, you can go to their website and either request it by e-mail or call their 800 telephone # which is listed on their home page. I think, too, they have a few free patterns that you can download, some ideal for batiks. There are also some fabulous looking batik quilts amongst the QB photos that you might find using the Search feature.

I just received some I ordered thru connecting threads and was so surprised that they were silky not stiff. I went back to their web site to double check and they are 100% cotton. They are beautiful and I am anxious to try them.

I think I got into quilting so I could buy batik fabrics!

I went back to your original post and found that I have just purchased batiks to make up that same pattern--Illusions- although I am making it for my son in browns, golds, and some greens.
I love the high thread count in batiks that is not always found in other patterns.
