Hi...just curious...do any of you make little girl's dresses from quilting fabric?
I have a friend who wants to make dresses to sell and she keeps looking at quilting fabric because of the fabric patterns. I thought it wouldn't be suitable, being a slightly looser weave. Anyone done this? And how did it go? Thanks Janice |
I have made things from "quilting" fabric that weren't quilts, clothing included. It went well.

I've made all kinds of clothing from "quilting" fabrics. No problems!!!

I haven't (I don't sew clothes) but the blogs are FULL of people making clothes for children out of the latest fabric collections.
And some of the prints are cuter as little dresses than they'd ever be in a quilt. |
Remember feed sacks?
They were used for clothing more than quilts way back when. They were generally a slightly looser weave than most current "quilting cottons" |
Current quilting fabric is a tighter weave than in the past. I have made quite a few outfits from it. But, if she wants to make a profit, using high quality, $10 a yard fabric would probably not work out.

I have made many clothing items for my daughter and granddaughter from "quilting" fabrics. Works just fine

why not? it is good quality cotton- makes great clothes...until the quilting bug started running rampant across the country the cotton's in the fabrics stores were mostly made for clothing- it has just been the past 10 years or so that the manufacturers figured out they could expand their market by calling it 'quilting cottons'
i've been sewing for 43 years- most of the clothes i made were from cottons- the same cottons that people are now using for their quilts...of course i used them for quilts too- the scraps that were not used in the clothes. |
Thanks everyone...sounds like its a 'go-er' then :)

I have made my daughter dozens of scrub tops from quilting fabric. It washes nicely and lasts a long time.
