My son has asked me to make him a comfortor and I was wondering if anyone has made one on this board. I usually make quilts and not comfortors. Any help would be appreciated.

Maybe just use a higher loft batting?

Not yet, but after paying a fortune to have one custom made, I'm about to make one myself. Just have to find the right fabric. I had picked the medium choice for batting in the one I had made by Calico Corners, but it is way too thick.

I got that already. I have a general idea but just wondered if anyone had a good way of going about it.

I guess I'll just jump in and do it. Hopefully it will turn out ok as I had to buy a bolt of fabric for it!

I made my brother one. I used a wide piece of fabric, one for top and one for bottom. Then I put in an extra high-loft poly batt. I have a longarm, and even with it, I had to raise my foot a tad to quilt it. But when quilting, I just made huge lines over the quilt, similar to the curvy lines you see on store-bought ones, so it didn't smash the batting flat. It was really easy. The quilting itself was the only challenging part.

My brother loves quilts, especially the soft quilting fabric, but wants them to be fluffy like a comforter, rather than flater. So that was the goal.

Hope this helps!

One Christmas I made 10 comforters. On some I put double polyester batting where it would cover the body. I grabbed a large piece of fabric that I thought would be long enough for the person getting it, picked out fab.s for borders and backing. I tied them every 3-4" with doubled Big Ball crochet thread. I've made lots of others also.

Thanks everyone for your ideas, I'll let you know how it comes out.

I'd love to see a picture, if you have one!!

If your son also likes quilts, you could make a comforter (duvet) cover. Piece the top as you like, add a back and use a zipper or buttons to hold any comforter or feather tick inside. I put bias tape in the upper corners of my comforter covers and on my comforter so it doesn't shift around. Looks like a super fluffy quilt.
Good luck and happy quilting.

My son doesn't own any comfortors just quilts. He use to have a twin size bed and now it's a queen. I'm just going to jump in and hope for the best!
