Check out this ladies' site, she had done some gorgeous crazy quilts, and this link tells how they were done, by hand, and embellished before putting together. Do browse the older blogs, 2013, '14 to find them.

When/If I get around to making one, I will add threads, ribbons and laces when sewing the pieces together, maybe some beads/buttons in the center only, as I will do as much as I can by machine. It's on my 'list' for 'one day'.

I have a crazy quilt made by my grandmother using mostly recycled fabrics of wool. She did all the piecing on foundation fabric, embroidered (no beading as made when they didn't have much $$) and then she used a thin blanket sheet for back and tacked the layers together where it wouldn't show as much (hidden in embroidery, corners). It's very heavy! check out the International Quilt Study Center (Lincoln NE) website--they have an extensive collection of crazy quilts and may have some posted on site.
