Human hair, huH? Well, I have five dogs -- wonder if I could sweep up some of their fur piling up in the corners of my house and use that? lol

You know, the human hair thing really makes sense to me. My darling gram taught me to take a pin, needle, safety pin etc and rub it thru my hair if it wouldn't easily go thru fabric. I tried it and it worked like magic! Still do it to this day, works like a charm. So it kind of makes sense to use it in pincushions. :-)

Regarding the sand; I also have heard you must bake the sand on a very low temperature. I just use ordinary polyfill.

If you buy sand that is specifically sold for use in childrens' sandboxes, it is already treated to make it safe. However, I think the last time I bought it, the smallest size was a 10 lb. bag. You can make an awful lot of pincushions with 10 lbs. of sand! I purchased a bag of crushed walnut shells from one of the chain pet stores. It will still make more pincushions than I could want, but it was a smaller bag and reasonably priced.
