Making pinwheels-how do I get them to be finished at a certain size?
Hi all,
I am working on a quilt from a package, and mis-cut or mis-sewed the pinwheels, so now they did not turn out the right size. Is there a formula that I can use (a general one) that will allow me to figure out the material I need in order to have 4 inch pinwheels, 5 inch pinwheels, 3.5" pinwheels.....you get the drift.... Thank you all for your help with this!! |
I'm assuming you are making your pinwheels from 4 half-square-triangles units? Take the finished size you want the pinwheels to be (once they're sewn into the quilt top). Let's say that's 4 inches. Divide that number in half - 2". Add 7/8" to that measurement, and cut squares that size (2-7/8"). Place a light and dark square right-sides together. Mark a diagonal line, sew 1/4" away from the line on each side. Cut on the drawn line and press (usually to the dark).
To make one pinwheel you will need 2 squares of each color. Any time you want to make a HST from squares, you add 7/8" to the finished size of the HST. Some people prefer to round that up to 1", then trim the HST unit down to the right size. Hope that helps..... |

All my quilting board friends,
I knew that if I asked you would know what to advise me to do. Thank you all so much!! I printed out the information so that I can review it (so that I can memorize it) and it sure helps to have the video show me how to easily make pinwheels!! |
