Making pinwheels-how do I get them to be finished at a certain size?

Hi all,
I am working on a quilt from a package, and mis-cut or mis-sewed the pinwheels, so now they did not turn out the right size.
Is there a formula that I can use (a general one) that will allow me to figure out the material I need in order to have 4 inch pinwheels, 5 inch pinwheels, 3.5" pinwheels.....you get the drift....
Thank you all for your help with this!!

I'm assuming you are making your pinwheels from 4 half-square-triangles units? Take the finished size you want the pinwheels to be (once they're sewn into the quilt top). Let's say that's 4 inches. Divide that number in half - 2". Add 7/8" to that measurement, and cut squares that size (2-7/8"). Place a light and dark square right-sides together. Mark a diagonal line, sew 1/4" away from the line on each side. Cut on the drawn line and press (usually to the dark).

To make one pinwheel you will need 2 squares of each color.

Any time you want to make a HST from squares, you add 7/8" to the finished size of the HST. Some people prefer to round that up to 1", then trim the HST unit down to the right size.

Hope that helps.....

All my quilting board friends,

I knew that if I asked you would know what to advise me to do. Thank you all so much!! I printed out the information so that I can review it (so that I can memorize it) and it sure helps to have the video show me how to easily make pinwheels!!
