Making a quilt using baseball caps
 

My partner and I way have a chance to make a quilt out of MANY baseball caps. Has anyone ever done that and is so please share any pointers or direct us to any site that might offer suggestions. We have made many t-shirt quilts and are looking forward to this new adventure.

This sounds like a really interesting project. I think I would applique parts of the caps to a larger block of lighter weight material for ease of and consistent weight piecing (i.e. you wouldn't be sewing the cap into the seams.)

As caps vary you have some interesting options. I think I would just use the logos as applique pieces in one cap's block. You could use the main panel with the logo and trim it in the cap's secondary color(s) as applicable. Include pieces of the brim and the back of the cap if they have logos.

Select the hats you want to use, decide on the layout of each applique set and go for it!

My first questions - which part of the caps would you use?

They are cut so that they follow the shape of the head so would not lay flat.

Have to pull apart a few hats to see if you can even get a consistent size/piece such as a triangle, etc. Also have to consider what type of fabric they are..... Some are thicker than others. You might need a pretty heavy duty machine to make it happen.

Watching this thread to hopefully get my hubby to part with 40 years of caps. They will not be wearable due to the foam breaking down. He suggested a quilt so ....

Thanks for all to suggestions, we did take an old cap and cut out the logo to see if it would flatten out to a usable piece. We think it can be done. We have thought about putting them onto another fabrics. I was thinking Jean and making it a rag quilt. Was interested if anyone has ever done this.
