Making Rag Quilts
Are rag quilts all made with flannel on at least one side?
I have never made one and have only seen quilts with flannel. I'm teaching a class at school and would like to introduce quilt making through rag quilts as they are quick and easy. But, while I can probably get my hands on quilting fabric, flannel or fleece will be harder. What do you make your rag quilts from? While I think of it - any other suggestions for easy projects? |
Rag quilts can be made from homespun, flannel, corduroy, denim - typically anything that will ravel. Some people make rag-like quilts out of fleece, which does not ravel, but which does curl up nicely.

Just make sure when your doing the snipping you are snipping on an angle. Then it ravels and blooms so nicely.

Those boxy pouches are fairly easy to do, don't take much fabric. You do need zippers though....
Also, charger cord pouches, potholders, microwave bowl cozies are all good beginner projects that don't take alot of fabric to make. |

My grandson took a class last year. They started with a square pillow to get the knack of straight seams. I think it took a few tries. Then they made a pillow case with two coordinating fabrics. He was quite proud of his efforts. He was 13 at the time.

I am making a rag quilt right now and using denim for one side and flannel for middle and flannel for outside but I guess you could use flannel on both sides. It would be warm and cozy. What about making pillow cases to teach in your class? That should be fairly easy.

Clip on an angle? I clip mine straight but maybe that's why they don't easily rag?? But they do shed prolifically!
I just finished a generous throw and used only 2 layers of flannel with 4 1/2" blocks, then used 1/2" seams. I did not use anything between because of weight and did not put an x through the blocks. I have used homespun in the past and also did something similar to Cathedral Window using denim and a rag edge for the circle. |
I've only used flannel so I don't know about other fabrics.
