I would like to make a receiving blanket that is suitable for swaddling. Are two layers too thick? And, are they constructed using envelope/birthing method? Thanks for your suggestions.

When I make them I use two layers. I make them either 36x36 or 40x40. I use the scraps from the smaller size to make a matching burp cloth.

Most receiving blankets I've seen in stores are just one layer sort of like cotton flannel.

If you do two layers, keep them both very light.

Birthing??? You've been watching Eleanora Burns, haven't you? She makes such a big deal about birthing. I just stick my hand in, grab the corner farthest from the hole and pull the thing inside out.

My friend makes these all the time for new babies and for donations to local NICUs. The NICU blankets are smaller. She often uses the envelope method and then just sews a big X across it and top stitches the edge to make it look finished. She also has a serger and sometimes uses it to finish the edges instead of birthing. Her gifts are very popular & much requested around here.

Sounds like pulling a calf or colt to me. Reach your hand in and feel around for the nose or hoofs. Birthing is a good description if you've ever done it.

For bundling our new babies, I sure preferred the square blankets to the rectangular ones.

I make them square and turn them by birthing. I make them as wide as the flannel `42-44" sq.

I make them square, two layers, birthing method. Topstitch the edges with a decorative stitch. I also like the square blankets better than the rectangular ones.
