making a sit down quilter
 

I have a used Pfaff Grand Quilter with an Inspira frame with a stitch regulator - I bought it used off of Craigs List. I paid a local gal to come to the house and give me & my husband a two hour lesson on it. That was 3 years ago and we decided we would rather have one of the Tiara/Sweet 16 sit down table quilters. I seems easier.
My question is - couldn't we just put the Grand Quilter into a desk/table top and use it the same way? My DH is a carpenter and I'm sure if I asked he could make one. When it is on the frame it is facing sideways like the sit down quilters.
Any advise would be welcomed.

you can do that, but the stitch regulator won't work on it if it has sensor wheels that make it work.

I asked the Innova technicians the same question about my 26" Innova, in case I want to downsize someday. The answer was yes, but there were several changes that would have to be made. Call the technicians for your machine and ask them what is involved. It might be better to sell your machine to someone who wants the machine on a frame and use the money toward buying the sit-down.

The Pfaff Grandquilter is just a straight stitch machine that can sew somewhere around 1600 stitches per minute so it's fast. So, yes you can put it in a desk/table/cabinet to sit and quilt. If your DH can build things, he could most certainly build a table that you could customize to fit this machine. You would want it to sit flush with the top of the table of course. You could really make it so that the machine sits either like a normal machine set up or turned like it is in the Inspira frame whichever you prefer. But as QuiltnNan said, you won't be able to use the stitch regulator.

Thank you for the input. We went to Habitat for Humanity re sell store this morning and bought a desk which he has already taken the top off of and cut the machine shape out of. The desk had a drawer so that helped with the depth and gave him room to put a bottom in. He seems very excited and got right to working on it - so hopefully I will be able to give it a try before long.

Is your Grand Quilter able to work if you have a foot controller? Most machines on a frame need the movement on rails (using encoders) to make it stitch.

I purchased a Pfaff Grandquilter used about six years ago with the same set up you have. The neck space wasn't large enough for me. I realized that it is a great sit down machine. It stitches beautifully. I got rid of the frame and decided that I would use it for piecing and walking foot quilting. I haven't tried it for freemotion. I am reluctant to replace it with another sit down machine, because I love that it has feed dogs.

Your adventure sounds very exciting. Please post photos once you have it finished.
