Making Your Own Satin Binding

Have any of you ever made your own satin binding for a quilt? Is it pretty simple or is it a slippery nightmare?
My college age son requested a flannel quilt with satin binding, like his favorite blanket when he was a kid. That cracked me up, but I totally understand the attraction.
I was looking at Wrights single fold Satin Blanket Binding which is 2 inches wide. They have a lot of colors, but nothing just right. So I was thinking about trying to make my own. Any advice will be welcomed!

Their are binding tools to help make your own. I prefer to use what is already made. I tried making my own by cutting my own strips. try YouTube, I'm sure they have tutorials for making your own.

Just checked and YouTube does have tutorials. you can also go to www.bellajeanboutique.com she has a tutorial for satin binding. Also shows you how to miter the corners.

I make my own satin bindings by using the flannel-backed-satin sold at JoAnns. I think I cut the strips about 8" and that gives a nice 2" wide binding on each side. This satin seems to hold up to all of the washings that these baby quilts get. My daughter received a crib quilt that had the normal satin binding and it did not stay nice after a few washes. (The application of this wide binding is different than the normal thin binding)

Tessagin, could you further pinpoint where I find that within her website? Thanks!

Judy, that is really great to know, especially the part about the flannel backed satin and how it holds up! Thanks!

I should have clarified that I make my own cotton bindings all the time and have no troubles with that or with mitered corners. And I can apply the Wrights Satin binding okay, not great but okay.
The only satin binding tutorials that I could find where for premade bindings like Wrights. I just wondered how slippery it was to make your own and whether the attempt makes you snatch yourself bald.

I found the flannel backed satin to be very easy to work with. When I used normal satin to make doggie beds for my Maltese I found it was a slippery nightmare! Elmer's School Glue to the rescue - once those seams were stabalized and in place by using the glue I found the sewing to be quite easy. The glue is so much better than pins on satin.

I have used costume satin to make ruffles for little girl quilt. I didn't have any problems out of the ordinary. I did use fray block because I was afraid of the fraying
