I've been thinking about making a mariners compass quilt. Does anyone have any tips on this? Is it best to paper piece it? Thanks!

I paper peiced this, its from caroldoak.com its free on her site, http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-144363-1.htm what i learned was to set up an assembly line and work one color at a time seemed to go much faster

quilt smart has a great fusable interfacing to make mariner's compass quilts- and lonestar quilts- they work very well- are precise- easy to use- great results- i highly recommend them-
i've used quilt smart interfacing's for a number of quilts over the years- the mariner's compass is my favorite- |
My Quilting friend Wanda just made one with squares and HST. It is from a website, I'll ask her to jump in and post the link. Hers came up beautiful.

I made a 3D mariner's Compass from the book "Wedgeworks 2" by Cheryl Phillips. No paper piecing, just cut and fold. The template comes with the book and instructions to make either 16 or 32 point compass. It was fun and quite easy.

We just did a mariner's compass at our quilt retreat. It was paper pieced. I've not tried it the other way, but paper piecing was pretty easy. IMO :D

Hint: If you take the time to re-draw all the lines for the points about 1/8" below where they are on the pattern you will be glad you did. What I do isput a dot about 1/8" below where the point seams meet & re-draw the sides of each point so that they cross at the new dot. This sort of floats the points so that when you set the circular piece into the setting square, you avoid cutting the points off & everything is perfect!!! Is this clear as mud? I'm sorry if it isn't. I can't remember where i heard about this, but I use it when I teach paper pieced mariner';s compass workshops. below is a pic of one of my recent classes. They were all so proud of their accomplishment! |
If you want to handpiece, try Cindy blackberg's stamps. Saves so much time tracing templates and is accurate.

Thanks everyone for the tips! I'm going to get started!
