Mariners compass

Have any of you done this pattern lately? If so any tips please. I am working on Xmas projects now but planning a nautical quilt for our bed to make in the new year. I have started collecting fabrics and ideas and very much want to include this block but is it very difficult?

I'd highly recommend paper piecing it. I've done a couple and they turned out beautiful.

Are you going to make one giant block, or a multi-block quilt?

I want to make four of this block to put on the corners of the central 18inch square.

I think that will be pretty! There are several different styles of Mariner's compass. If the blocks are 12" to 18", you should be able to print out quarters of the block and paper piece them. That's how I did mine, which was a 12".

The only one I've done was the central medalion and I didn't know about paper piecing. Still don't, actually. It looks like a volcano sitting on the bed. It was probably more difficult than a new quilter should have tackled. Precision is key, so if you're good with that, you should do fine!
