Mario Bros. Quilt... questions
A friend of my daughter has asked for a tied fleece Mario Bros. blanket for Christmas. She has not been able to find, nor have I found online, Mario Bros. fleece. I did find cotton and flannel. She is now wondering if she can applique cotton or flannel cut outs from the fabric onto the fleece with some kind of fusible. Would this work? Would she need to sew down the edges or will the appliques stick willingly to the fleece? Will fleece melt when ironed? I've never used fleece before so I don't have the answers she needs. I would appreciate any advice you can give us. Thanks in advance!

The heat needed for most fusibles would melt fleece. I'm not a person who does applique, so putting cutouts on fleece isn't something I can advise you on. Hang on for a few more minutes---I'm sure that more help will be coming from someone who has answers for you! Good luck----

Thank you, Pinkiris. I wondered if the heat would melt the fleece.

Why not just use a satin stitch to attach the appliques? That way if you use flannel, you won't have to worry about the edges fraying. Although if you cut the piece larger than "Mario" and stitch inside the edges, the edges would fray and you would have a "rag" applique. I'm not sure how the cotton applique would look on the fleece.
Do you have access to an embroidery machine? You can do great "in the hoop" appliques with it. Others may have more suggestions, too. |
You could applique the cutouts if you glued them on. I would stitch around the edge. My personal favorite is satin stitch as it goes on raw edge applique and I don't like to turn the edges. However, there are lots of choices. Quilters do most anything and whatever you prefer is correct for you. Use a permanent fabric glue and you don't have to worry about it coming loose in the wash.

why not just use the flannel on one side-fleece on the other?

If you use the flannel make sure you preshrink it first - as the flannel will shrink and the fleece won't also when stitching on the fleece, the fleece will Stretch ( it has a lot of give ) - Like was suggested maybe fleece on one side applique ( with cotton or flannel) on the other side
