Marking with Crayola washable markers

1 Attachment(s)
I read on a blog that someone uses crayola washable markers to mark her quilts and they wash out fine. I thought, "what a truly simple idea" but how clever.

I have several fabric markers, but they do seem to not show up well on the right fabrics, etc...so I went out yesterday and bought these. There are 24, and any color I could possibly need--I would have possibly liked white, but there is yellow...so..

Yesterday I used a dark green to mark a quilt. Today I finished the quilt and washed it, and sure enough...it came out just fine.

So, such a simple and relatively inexpensive solution for this problem! I feel weird I didn't think of it before.

They are great, but be sure to test on EACH fabric. I had some that didn't come out of my test piece.

The new Crayola Washable Markers are being advertised as super washable. So far all the super washable colors have come out of the piece of white muslin I used to test them.

cassiemae 11-22-2014 02:07 PM

I use these all the time and have never had a problem.

I haven't had a chance to use them on a quilt, but I tested lots of the colors on some scraps and they all did wash out.

YES !! ALWAYS do a test on each fabric you are using. It is better to be safe than sorry !!

I agree, test every single fabric you use. If you use 12 different fabrics test all 12 of them. Better safe then sorry. :)

I have to reveal just how cheap I am - I use washable markers from the dollar store. Yes, I do test them.

I also buy my washable school glue there. Two bottles for $1.00!

If you plan to iron at all while working with your marked blocks , make sure you do an "ironed" test ... mark the fabric with the marker .. iron it then toss is the wash.

I used the Ultra Washable Crayola Markers on my leaf placemats to mark the veins. Had to redraw some of them. I just spritzed the marks w/water and they came right out.

I am a longarm quilter and use WASHABLE CRAYOLA MARKERS to mark my quilting designs. The only color I do not use is the black. I have had a problem getting the black to wash out in 1 washing. DO NOT IRON OVER THE WASHABLE MARKER. This can cause some "trace" to be left behind. i.e. You wash and the marker comes out but over time you see a shadow of the marker. I've been using the Crayola brand marker for years and the iron is the only problem I have encountered. I just buy the small 8 pack of colors which last for a very long time and they are not very expensive.

I do the same.

What a timely topic! Just jumped on this afternoon to research marking tools since I'm going to try doing other that SITD for only the second time. It never occurred to me to look "outside the sewing box" ;-)

This is brilliant. I learn the best stuff on this board. I'm going to put some of these in my Christmas stocking! :)

I use the washable markers and/or frixion pens. I always starch my fabric before cutting and every time I press as I go along. By the time I mark my quilt top, there is so much starch that I am actually drawing on starch and not fabric. LOL! Never had a problem removing marks.

Jingle 11-24-2014 04:17 AM

I use them all the time to mark the numbers on my blocks and rows. I never and test they always wash out.

OrangeSherbet 11-24-2014 05:20 AM

To use frixion pens or not to use frixion pens.

This is nice to know. Thanks for sharing!

What a fabulous idea, thanks for the FYI. I would probably test the markers on a sample fabric before I use them, but from what you've told us, it's a simple solution to an age old problem - how to mark quilts.

susanwilley 11-26-2014 07:42 AM

The crayola washable markers are what I use all them time too. Have never had a problem with them washing out. Love them!

But, it is a good idea to testy everytime....just in case!

mojo11 11-26-2014 10:53 AM

I'm glad I found this thread. I would never have thought to use these. Thank you.

brandeesmom 11-26-2014 07:11 PM

I've been using these markers for about 10 years now and have not had a problem with them washing out, they are great!

meyert 11-26-2014 07:29 PM

I use the Crayola washable markers all of the time. I love them. The fine tip fit right into my stencils for marking....I have bought like 10 packs of these :) I have learned that all laundry soap doesn't wash them out the same. Dawn dish soap works like charm! I have a spray bottle that I fill half with water and half with Dawn.. then I can easily spray where its needed. I have ironed over the marker and it still washes out just fine

MadQuilter 11-27-2014 01:05 AM

Just make sure to NOT heat - set the markers.

susanwilley 12-04-2014 05:59 PM

I use the washable markers too and have never had a problem with them. They all wash out perfectly!

Me too. I have used their glue for years with my applique projects. It is awesome and cheap. Have bought their markers also. Great savings.

I do test EVERY fabric, I have run into a few fabrics that has not washed out.

mkc 12-12-2014 01:56 PM

Thank you to everyone who posted about this! I just finished what is only my 4th quilt and had decided on straight lines for the quilting. At first I tried just using the guide bar with my machine, but the results weren't good so I spent a little time picking out all those stitched. Got brave and tried marking the lines with the Crayola Ultra Washable Markers. So much easier and a much, MUCH better finished product. I finished binding the quilt this morning and it just came out of the washer - absolutely no trace of the marker :-D It's a Christmas gift for my mother-in-law and I'm thrilled! You guys rock!

in my experience for some reason, yellow won't wash out well.
