Marking on dark fabric
 

Hello Everyone! I've read all I can find on QB regarding marking on dark fabric.

I'm wondering if there is a new and wonderful product out there that will stay on long enough to quilt, but be easily removable.

I love the Frixon markers but they don't show on dark colors. I bought MiracleChalk which is white but fat. I love it as it irons out well also, but it doesn't come in a thin pencil form. Thus my lines were too thick to make a nice line. I tried chalk but it rubs off so easily I lose my lines.

Any suggestions? Thanks

I bought some of the Bohin white chalk pencil lead refills and use them with an old 0.9mm mechanical pencil I have here at home. (Has to be the 0.9mm, rather than 0.5 or 0.7mm mech pencils. You can get them at any office supply, Target, Walmart, etc). They work FANTASTICALLY well. I found them at 50% off with a $1 flat rate shipping at Joann's. Unfortunately that sale isn't going on anymore. The leads are kinda spendy (for what they are) at regular price.

I also have some Roxanne white pencils which work pretty well. It's much more convenient to use the mechanical pencil though.

I didn't think to look, but you might want to see if Home Depot sells white chalk leads for mechanical pencils. They could work as well. I have also heard of people using the white marking chalk that you can get at Home Depot, spread with a sponge brush in lieu of Pounce Powder. But the Pounce powder works well too.

Another thing, put some fine grade sandpaper under the quilt top before marking, if you use pencil of any kind. This will prevent the stretch that happens when marking with pencil. In lieu of sand paper, iron freezer paper to the back before markign.

I use slivers of Dove or Ivory bar soap.

how do you get the markings off? I won't be able to wash the quilt before returning to the owner.

Another fine line marker which I have been pleased with the results ...
... white ceramic lead pencils (refillable mechanical pencil) from Fons and Porter.

They leave a nice fine line which holds well til I am done quilting.
Very often, it disappears pretty much on its own with the quilting.
If it needs to be removed, there's an eraser on the tip of the pen.
A gentle rub and it's gone.

Fons and Porter have a quilt marking mechanical pen that you can order with black or white lead. I get mine from Connecting Threads but JoAnn's and other places carry it as well. I can't say how well the mark comes out except by washing so you might research that some.

Clover has a white gel marking pen that is sold at JoAnns. It works wonderfully for me on my dark browns, reds, and blacks and comes out with a hot iron or water. I love this pen and buy them when I find them. I store it tip down so it doesn't dry out.

So there's a white pen that stays on until its washed off? I've been wondering what I could use to mark on dark green that would need to stay put through an entire hand quilting process.
