Marti Michell 4-layer seam
 

Hi, everyone -

I purchased the QAYG book above, on the advice of the Board, and I'm trying my best to understand it. Let's just say it's not the fault of the author. :)

I am thinking of quilting the center of my next quilt, with batting and batting rolled up at the sides, and adding the borders with the 4-layer "flip and sew" method.

Where I am confused is this: she says (I think) that if even one section is quilted to the edge, the 5-layer seam is required. I was planning to quilt the center into the seam allowance, probably 2.5" apart. Would the stitch and flip still work to attach the borders?

I think the 5-layer seam is only needed if you're adding a front and back piece. If you already have the backing and batting on the quilt, you should be able to add flip and sew borders without her 5-layer seam, but you need to leave enough of the center un-quilted so that you have room to seam the border onto the center piece without the backing and batting in the way. Then flip the border over and finish quilting.

I did a king sized quilt using Marti Mitchell's Quilting in Sections (I think this is what you are referring to?). I quilted right up to the edge of all parts. The sandwich would be backing that is larger than the center and borders will be. In other words, as large as it would be using a regular assembly system. Then I added the borders one at the time using the flip and stitch method thru all layers (top, batting, backing). Then I quilted the borders. I'm not sure that's exactly how she recommends, but it worked for me.

My center was 4 pieces so that was another adventure :D

IQ2 and cash_mom, I think you are showing me 2 different ways that will work. It looks like I can either sew clear through to the batting and then flip or leave enough edge to just add the border without mowing through all the layers.

I would never have the confidence to try this without clarifying it first. Thank you!!

Contact the company you may have to send an email as the phone number does not work they are having line problems but someone will contact you, they helped me with instruction booklets for some templates that I had gotten for a friend.

You aren't the only one who doesn't understand it. I don't either. I gave away the first copy of the book I had, then a couple of years later bought another. It's still as clear as mud. I've found other methods of QAYG.
