I have cut my logs to proper length before sewing and followed Judy Martin's instructions and was frustrated beyond sanity. I started over and used the old fashioned way, sew the logs on and then trim. So much more enjoyable. I press after sewing each round and then square up the block. No one has ever commented that any block was wonky and believe me there are several guild members that would point that out and say I know what you did. Jenny Doan does a great tutorial on plain log cabin block that would be a great starting project. I have made the log cabin using wedges and that was simplest of all.

Dunster, your quilt is gorgeous! Your tip about cutting fabric lengthwise is right on, and this is coming from a former home ec teacher. Less stretch lengthwise than crosswise.

Creative grids has a great log cabin ruler. I used Donna Jordan's method for the curvy log block and it worked great!

I have the ruler and have never used it. One of the other members mentioned she paper pieces her log cabins. I would try paper piecing it if I did another log cabin. It’s so much fun and I love the accuracy paper piecing offers. I hope we get to find out what you decided on and see the finished project 🙂

I was looking on YouTube the other night trying to find my background noise and I came across Quilting from The Heartland, so I plugged in the playlist and let it go. While I was working on my hexagon quilt, I heard her talk about the log cabin, so I stopped what I was doing, rolled over to my laptop and watched her. I've learned a lot from Shar Jorgensen, I really like how she explains things and it gave me enough confidence that I think my next project is going to be a Log Cabin quilt. Once I got on her website and saw how expensive her templates were, I realized I was going to have to go another route to do this quilt, so I got on Amazon and found Marti Michell. I'm thinking of getting the ruler for the 1 inch and 2 inch logs for a 12-inch block. Has anyone else used her rulers? |
Marti Michell is an icon in the quilting world. I have a few of her rulers. I have seen her presentations in person. She loves math and her rulers and techniques are proven. She, frankly, amazed me. She is very nice too. Her husband travels with her..he is a great guy too. It has been about 4 years since I saw them. She has a ton of rulers.

I would go crazy paper piecing a LC, unless it was a small one. I did do that and enjoyed it but I don't really like to paper piece.
I cut the logs and haven't had a problem. I've made more LC than any other pattern. Dunster, yours is gorgeous. I love the quilting pattern you used. I also like to make them when I'm in a slump. It's mindless and fun. |
