So today the movers are here loading up our stuff! Ya for moving to Hawaii! I have had a lot of time to ponder and twiddle my thumbs. I was wondering if anyone has made a massive log cabin quilt block. Like one block to make the top. Instead of a square center have it rectangle so the top didn't turn out square. And then just keep adding row after row after row. Lol might be interesting. I tried to google it but came up with nothing. Anyways just my random thought :)

check out the Gees Bend quilts. Many were made of just one log cabin type block. Some were four giant blocks.
Kaye Woods 6 Hour quilts is made that way although smaller

I just saw one today in the "All People Quilt" email! Their's finished as a 51" square but a rectangle would be cute too.

Yes, I've made one from a picture I saw in a quilt magazine, although I modified the pattern. I think mine came out about 48" square. The logs were 6-61/2" wide (if I remember correctly...) didn't take a pic before giving away, sadly.. I'll see if I can find the pattern...

Are you being Military transfered? You are going to LOVE the Hawaiian quilting scene. I lived in Hawaii for 32years before moving to Tucson AZ.

My first half-dozen quilts were basically one giant log cabin block. I just didn't know that was what it was called. Like you said; start with center block and build around it till you get the finished size you want.
I didn't even measure anything. Using mostly bed sheets, I'd flip one edge of the sheet (to like 4")? and after cutting the length I had a 8' strip. As I made each strip I would sometimes divide the strips with multiple fabrics per strip. Have I lost you?

I've included 3 blocks I made that way recently. It may be hard to tell that they are strips sewn around the center. because the more I make these the more complex they get. It's also my fall-back quilt when I want to relax and not think so hard.

Yes I did, don't have a photo of it on my computer any longer. It was a pattern & kit that I purchased from Keepsake Quilting. The strips are all different sizes and it really looked very nice when finished. May in Jersey

Here is a free pdf to try for a massive log cabin block quilt. This one is only a 38" square. Hopefully it is enough to inspire you to do a larger quilt starting with a rectangle instead of a square. I did an internet search but could not find exactly what you desribed that you are looking for in a single log cabin block quilt. What do you think of this link?

I made one for my sister from apple fabrics. I don't have a pic as she has it, but it turned out beautiful. I did make it square and she loved it. Using rectangles would work just as well and I think you will be pleased with the results. Pics when you get it done (smile). I hope you love Hawaii!!
