First of all, I never knew you existed!I;m happy to have found a place where I can talk about quilting and I won't be looking at a face like a deer in headlights.
I have a problem. I'm using an old quilting guide to make what I thought was an easy quilt for my first grandchild. It calls for drawing a 5" square across the fabric with half inch intervals. When you cut it out you should have a 5 and a half inch square. Correct? Then you make a four patch block out of 2 and a half in squares cut out the same way making a 3" square. When I put the 4 patches together the block is no longer the same size as the 5 and a half inch block.
Am I doing something wrong here? Please help me out!

Hi Mrspat and welcome to the board. Are you sure that you cut all your blocks the correct size?? Sometimes I screw up and THINK I have measured correctly and I did not. 4 3" blocks sewn together with a 1/4" seam allowance into a 4-patch should then measure 5 1/2" square (5" finished). Your numbers are correct--just go back and remeasure the blocks you cut.

I think I would make the four patch block first and then cut the plain block to match it . allowing for seam allowances of course.

If your four patch is larger, you can always trim to the right size. Just make sure your intersection is in the center. If it's smaller, you can trim your solid square to size. Whichever is the case, check your seams and make sure they are the required .25". If you post pics, I know someone will be able to help. And welcome to our group. We're glad you found us.

That sounds like a very forgiving pattern. If you trim them all the same size and keep seams consistent, you'll be fine.
