Today is Weds.May 21st and QuiltersTV is showing Bits and Pieces part 2 with El Burns.
She does a quilt back that has to have the pattern matching at the seam line. I have tried to match patterns and had never been able to do it.
She used fusible thread and it is so simple.
She also demonstrates free motion on a regular sewing machine.
Great show.

Maybe I could do that in about a 100 years :? It is way out of my league too, I am lucky to get the quilt top seams lined up correctly :D

Is there a difference between matching the pattern on a quilt back and matching it when constructing a slipcover or clothes? Seems like a quilt back would be easier simply because it's flat. More like wallpaper!

Oh i think a huge difference, i think the only way i would ever attempt to match seams on the back of a quilt, or to do a reversible quilt, is if each square i was doing was a quilt as you go square, then i can see the possibility...hmmm

IMHO with all of the piecing, each tiny error is amplified over the whole quilt. Most of us have to fudge a seam or points here and there. You would have to piece perfectly to have each and every seam/point match up on the front and the back. It would really show especially if you were going to stitch in the ditch on any of it.

Maybe I misunderstood what Rose Marie wrote. I thought she was simply matching the pattern of the fabric down the seam line of the backing, not matching the front seams to the back seams all over a quilt. Matching one center seam on the back to the center seam on the front is not too hard, but I agree with you on trying to line up any more than that. Perhaps Rose Marie will clarify what she meant?

Rose Marie, I should have gone and watched the program first :oops: :oops: It is an awesome way to match seams when working with prints, plaids, etc.... using fusible thread. It was not about piecing the back and trying to match seams to the pieced front. When I can get my foot out of my mouth I will go and eat my dinner :oops: :oops:

Be sure and watch the episode, it is so informative.
Sometimes I have to match a pattern on a border and this method would work for that too. I use fusible thread on bindings but never thought about useing it to match a print.
