I am going to make some table toppers and have some material that I will never use. I was wondering if it would be O.K. for a substitute for low-loft batting? Has anyone done so? Thanks...

I don't have a response for you - I have several I would like to make in the next weeks or so and interested in the responses as well. Thanks for asking,

I have heard of using prewash flannel but not fabric.
|
I've not done this, but I can't imagine why it wouldn't work. If in doubt, make a little test sandwich using this fabric as batting and see if you like the result.
|
Many people use sheets....fabric should be okay as long as it does not show thru the top.
|
I can't see why not...I also use flannel for my batting for table toppers.

I sew alot with donated/garage sale fabric, etc... I freq use low quality or ugly fabric as batting.. if it is VERY low quality I 2 layers in... rights sides togehter.. The trick is to make sure it does not show thru ur quilt top or backing...
I do prewash/preshrink everything. |

I do prewash/preshrink everything. However you have to realize that whatever you make with like this will have NO body, and will not be good to use for hot pads/table runners where a hot item might sit on it. |
exactly what do you mean by "material" that I will never use"
What kind of material is it. Without knowing it is difficult to give informed suggestions. |
sure you can!!!
you can use flannel, muslin, what ever you want- as long as it's not going to show through I have table runners and table cloths with wonderful drape/weight/body that simply have a layer of muslin in them instead of batting- a few years ago i made my mom a table runner with a thin batting- she did not like it and asked for one with out batting- i used muslin instead- it turned out so much better= now that's how we do most of them- you can use what you want- i would just be careful of poly blends if anything hot will be put on them---like right off the stove pans |
