So - deemail - if I am reading correctly - when planning to cut on the bias, I'm shooting for the same end result in inches, but in cutting on the diagonal, I would end up with a different number of strips to end up with the same number of inches. right, you will have a few strips that are long (the ones across the bias in the middle...but as you work your way, on a 45 deg angle, over toward the corner, the strips will be the same width, of course, but they will be shorter, so you will have more seams... the good thing is that the ends are all 45 deg so you can just sew them together with no trimming and no loss of fabric like you do when you do a bias seam on a straight strip. just be sure to cut the selvedges off and trim the cut ends straight before you start so you don't have wonky seams that are ALMOST 45 but not quite...

as you make the first bias cut, it will be (for a one yard piece.....36 x 1.414) or 50 in long for each complete middle strip...then there will be a few that are the same length, right beside it, but soon they will get shorter and of course, you made a big triangle with the first cut so you will go back on that piece where they get shorter, too...
