This is the first time I have started a new topic. I have replied to a few on going but never posted. So if I do this wrong please forgive.
I have been saving the selvedges from my fabric for a long time. I now have a large trash bag full. Does anyone have some new ideas as to what I can do with these. So far I have made squares by sewing them on muslin. But I would like something really new. I know there are some very creative people out there. Thank you in advance for your ideas. Pat |

sarahbelle, that is a neat website!
|
What a cool website. Thanks for the tip.
|
That's the blog! Be sure and go back thru the archives and see the dress and the chairs.
|
I saw someone make them into house-shapes. Each was very charming. They are on the website of Empire State Quilters.
|
My cat mat is featured on the side bar of the selvage blog. Look on the right hand side and look way down. It's a black and white cat on a mat that I made. I make cat mats all the time for all the cats I know.

Great web site

One of our members just posted this tutorial on our board :D:D:D

Ilove the lampshade. I was going to buy a new one for the lamp on my cutting table, but with this idea I could easily fix this one up to be functional!!!
|
What an interesting site! And I did see the dress. Now that would take a whale of a lot of selvedges! Beautiful.
|
Unreal how cool selvedges are!! Gail I love your cat quilt!!
I have learned so much in my few months here, as I said UNREAL!! Thanks for the great link!! |
I never thought to save selvage edges....that would expand the scrap bin too! I am amazed at what can be done with them! Thanks for posting that link!
|
I knew everyone would come up with GREAT suggestions.
they are all great. Keep them coming. |
thanks for the website!
I have a sewing stool (chair) that need recovered what a great idea and I love the lamp! I have a large glass pickle jar 1 gallon size that I have filled with empty wood thread spools, So my hubby could get a lamp kit and make a lamp for my sewing table, selvage lampshade would just be the greatest! |
So glad you started this thread. Love the ideas on the blog. The cat is adorable. I plan to make some postcards. Thx.

ok, I love all these ideas, but have a quick question. How wide to you cut the selveges? I see that there is still some of the fabric above the selvage andwas wondering what a good width would be.

selvedge pincushions.... this is what I am saving mine for (I figure i could manage a small project like this) |
|
I think most cut them about 1/2" above the white(name area)
at least this is how I do it. |
When I first started collecting the selvedges I would cut them very close to the white. but found that by the time I sew a 1/4 seam allance they almost dissapear. I now cut them about 3/4 to inch above the white. It works much better.

Someone mentioned the house-shaped selvedge blocks shown on the Empire Quilt Guild website, May's BOM. I won them. You can see how they're put together at www.empirequilters.net
On the same website in Show & Tell for May there's a picture of me (Verna Fitzgerald) holding the small wall hanging I made using selvedges. I've been saving them for about a year, since I saw a selvedge quilt at the Empire show in May 2009, and this was my first attempt to make something. Karen Griska, the woman behind www.selvageblog.blogspot.com, is a member of Empire and I've become one of her "groupies". |

I cut them 1" wide. I just posted a picture of my "bag of many colors" made with them. My suggestion is to sew them onto a backing and then cut them out into the dimension you want.
here is my bag..quilted as I went, onto the backing I fused my batting to. |
I'm saving selvages and I have a bag full. Now I know what I am going to do!
|
pot holder backings, coasters, totes, you name it...treat them like any other fabric and USE them up...
I also use mine in the gargen! |
