I'm doing a quilt that is 84" x 84", 6" finished squares. The quilt will alternate so the first 6" square is just a square of fabric, next is a block, than a square. If half of the quilt is the 6" squares, how much fabric do I need for just the 6" squares? (the pink in the link below)


My boss is Mormon and for his family he is thinking Xmas gifts of the quilt on the bed:

If I did my math right you should need 3 and 1/2 yards of fabric (which leaves you a little room for making sure fabric is straight)
The way I see it you should get 6 6'5" squares from one strip cut at 6.5 by wof and there should be 6 6.5xwof cuts to 42" of fabric-again leaving a little room.

I concur with LovingIsabella There are 196 blocks (14x14) in your quilt, and half are solids, so that's 98 solid blocks. You can get 6 blocks in a strip cut 6.5" x WOF. That means you need 98/6 = 17 strips, each 6.5" wide, so that's 110.5" fabric, or 3 yards and 2.5". Allowing for shrinkage and squaring up the fabric, you might get by with 3.25 yards, but I would go for 3.5. And if you add 3/4 yard for binding, you might want to make it at least 4 to 4.25 yards.

I would agree with needing 4 yards if you are going to use it for the binding too. I usually pick up an extra 1/2 yard "just in case" also. :D:D:D

At 84"x84" you'll need 14 in each direction for a total of 196 squares total. Half of that = 98 squares.

Conservatively, you probably get 6 suqares out of a length of fabric (most of my fabrics after washing measure about 42")
98 squares divided by 6 = 17 (rounded) So you need 17 lengths @6.5" = 110.5" (divide by 36" = 3 yards)

3 yards would give you exactly what you need but that would not allow for any miscuts, shrinkage in the wash, off-grain, etc. I would buy at least 3.5 yards.

Thank you! That's what I was coming up with but it seemed like a lot. I want it to drape, whereas my regular quilts don't usually drape, so I think that's where the extra yardage is throwing me off.
