math ? pieced border
 

I have always wanted to do a pieced border but the math scares me unless its in a full quilt pattern
I have a quilt measures 60.5 by 48.5
looking at a pieced border name of bud border in my 101 block book
what size do i do my inner thin border for it to come out
size of border 4.5 finished with a 4.5 repeat can i get this to work or would a different size pieced border work?

It's 60.5" x 5" for the sides. 48.5 + 4.5 + 4.5 = 57.5" x 5" for the top & bottom.


For bias borders:
You need to add 2 x finished width of border (4.5")
60.5 + (2 x 4.5) = 69.5 + .5" for seam allowance, so 70 x 5" for sides

48.5 + (2 x 4.5) = 57.5 + .5" for seam allowance, so 58 x 5" for top & bottom

EDIT: I am assuming you are not super concerned about each border having all pieces exactly 4.5".

First we need to know if the 60.5 X 48.5 is the FINISHED size of the quilt or the raw size.
I'll take a guess and say it's the raw, so the quilt will finish at 60 X45.
60 divided by 4.5 = 13.333, so you want 14 the long way which will require the quilt to be 63", and 45 divided by 4.5 is 10 the short way, which will fit perfectly. You need a finished inner border added only to the 2 short ends to bring the long side up to 63", so 1.5" additional on both sides. You would cut the strips 2" to finish at 1.5.

Looking at your quilt dimensions, if you could find a border that finishes at 2, 4, or 6 inches, you wouldn't need to add an inner border at all because the math would come out perfectly. (2, 4, and 6 all evenly divide 60 and 48).

remember to make 4 additional blocks for the corners.

yes PaperPrincess that is raw measurment i found one with 4 wide by 6 repeat it has an iner border in thepieced border

There is a great app by Kaufman's that will do the math for you.

A tried and true method I often resort to, my dear -- make your blocks with no worry about fitting, and then use both cornerstones and a head stone centered to fill the spaces. These corner and headstones become design elements in themselves.
