Mathematically Challenged Right Now

3 Attachment(s)
This is why I haven't made a pieced border yet--- the maths at the end!

So I have seen some pictures on Pinterest where some quilters used the leftover chevron units from the last Bonnie Hunter mystery quilt in the border. I thought, "How neat! I could do that too!"

The length side borders went on smoothly, with 50 chevron units per side. My problem came with the width side borders, with 41 chevron units per side. (For those who did the Bonnie Hunter Mystery Quilt, I ended up doing a 3/4 size to the pattern, so that's probably half my problem right there...)

Two corners match up perfectly.

The second two corners look like this.

Any suggestions on how to make this pickle work will be so appreciated!!!

I would unsew the offending side a short distance...pin, easing in the excess so the border ends where you want.

cenpaqltr 03-26-2018 05:42 AM

I would give a corner stone a try... when all fails... that usually works.

I'm not a great quilter, so take my idea with a grain of salt. What I would do is take the longer side off for a few inches (however many you think you need). I would increase the size of the seam between the chevrons slightly. If you spread it out between several pieces, it won't be noticeable. You're probably talking about 1/2 inch or less. If you spread that between just four units, it's 1/8 inch per seam. If you spread it between 8 chevrons, it's just 1/16th of an inch.

Just measure it and see how much you need to take it in.

I'd just put in cornerstones. No one would ever question it. It's really beautiful!

I don't know if you are talking about the "fullness" or the fact that the bottom photo chevron goes in the opposite direction. The sides you like, the chevron points match, on the side you don't one points down, the other up. If it is a direction thing, there really isn't anything you can do about it because of the odd number (41). Hope this is clear. I'd just use cornerstones and call it a day.

The issue is that you have an even number of chevrons on one side meeting up with an odd number on the other. The chevrons are not going to meet up the same. As mentioned above, you can add cornerstones. Another option would be to interrupt the side with the 41 patches. have 20 chevron patches, one plain peach colored patch, then 20 more chevrons. This way, you take the odd chevron off on the end. I've done a couple of BH pieced borders and have found that she often puts an odd block in the middle to make the pattern come out in the corners.

Yep, the single 2” rectangle in the middle of the 41 block side would be simplest way to solve the issue. It just won’t work to try to get those to meet otherwise.

Did you have a plan for the corners?

I like that idea, thanks! I might try that.

Yes, my plan is to have a 4.5" neutral square with a snowballed pink triangle tying the borders together , if that makes sense?

Thanks for all your help!

You did not say what the width of each strip is. I’m assuming it’s one inch. I would rip out the side with 41 chevrons and take in many seams by 1/16th inch. I would think it wouldn’t be noticeable. Then I would add another piece to make 42. Lots of work but that would make me happiest.

This is essentially what bkay was saying as well. I would probably have to do this myself instead of adding a plain piece in the middle. My symetrical brain would not let me have the border any other way, lol.

I would probably go with the cornerstones.

DebbieJJ 03-27-2018 03:53 AM

Just wanted to say you did a great job on your beautiful quilt! Please show us the finished quilt!

It appears that your situation has been analyzed adequately so you can choose a solution now that is in keeping with your own feelings. It is amazing to me how so many come to the aid of a person with a difficult (for them) situation. We will all be anxious to see how you solve the situation. Good luck.

I too would do cornerstones; gorgeous quilt.

momsbusy 03-27-2018 06:27 AM

I would adjust the seam allowance on a few of the border pieces. If I want to make the border smaller, I would make a seam right next to the existing seam on a few border pieces until it fits. If it’s too short, I would make a few seams smaller. It is unlikely that anyone will ever notice.

sorry no help but very nice quilt!

klswift 03-27-2018 07:20 AM

I would not try to 'make it work'. I would use cornerstones and probably do them in one of the other shades, maybe the darker brown or even the blue. Rather than hiding it, make it look like you planned it that way!

A corner stone with some type of curved appliqué would camouflage any corner difference. You could then say, “I liked this way better than the pattern.” Lol. Remember it is your quilt, make it your way. No “accidents, just design decisions”

Problem Solved :)

Thanks for all the advice, ladies! I love how willing everyone helps out!

So here's what I decided to do. I liked Paperprincess's idea of unpicking the odd number chevron and adding solid peach square in the center of the border. It got my brain wheels turning.

I unpicked 3 chevron units instead, the odd one at the end and the two center ones. Then I sewed in two larger chevron units that equal the size of the three original into the center. I think it looks much better now, and my corners still meet nicely. I'm happy with it now and can definitely live with it:)

I'd just take off one strip from this end and add it to the other end. Unfortunately, that would entail removing the entire strip first so you could make the correction.

zozee 03-27-2018 03:38 PM

You did it! Looks great.

Maureen NJ 03-28-2018 02:54 AM

Wow! It looks great. BTW, I forgot to add earlier that I love your quilt. Great colors!

ArtsyOne 03-28-2018 03:19 AM

It looks great!

Chris Denno 03-28-2018 09:09 AM

I agree....how about that same blue?
