My sister in law works at a Hotel and she offered to give me a bunch of queen size quilted mattress pads and sheets for quilt backs. She said they always send those items to the Goodwill as they are still in good condition. Maybe you can go to some of the local hotels and motels as a source for backing.

i've used mattress pads and there's something to keep in mind. wherever there's a line of stitching, the mattress pad wants t fold. after it becomes your filling, it still wants to fold there. you have to take that into consideration when you plan your own stitching design. it's best to do your quilting pattern with most of the stitches going in the opposite direction to the mattress pad pattern. so if the pad has stitches going up and down you want to stitch mostly side to side, and so on. if the pad has an all-over design you can do straight-line quilting.
