Medallion Quilts
I'm looking for a really great medallion pattern to use as the center of a quilt. Anybody got any ideas. I've already thought about using a dresden plate but can't quite get the measurements right to make it lay flat. Any other ideas/patterns would be greatly appreciated.

A paper pieced Mariners Point would make a nice medallion.

How about a nice applique block of some subject that you would like, urn of flowers are traditional or a feathered star block.

I agree, mariner's compass, carpenter's wheel, feathered star are good places to start. Here's some inspiration:

I used one as the center for my Round Robin quilt in my avatar. |
Wow Peckish thanks for the eye candy. Some of those just blew my eyeballs out with their beauty!

I like a Lone Star for a centerpoint. The strip pieced ones don't look too difficult.

Pick one from Carol Doaks 50 paper pieced stars.

One of the prettiest medalion quilts I ever made was called "Vintage Moments" by Marsha McClusky. I just love that pattern! I made 2 in 30's prints and one in batiks. They are all hand quilted and turned out beautifully. It has a feathered star in the center. Try looking on quilterscashe.com for a center block pattern. They have lots of free patterns in different sizes. Many of them would be perfect for a center medalion.

Yes, those a really good ideas. If you are having trouble with Dresden Plate, you would probably do better to paper piece it. I ramrodded an all DP raffle quilt for our local library. Several participants said they'd never had a DP turn out well before.
